In the last century, Greenwich Village, the West Village, and the East Village have been continually shaped by the people who live, create, organize, and gather there. Home to generations of artists, writers, musicians, and activists, the Villages remain a constantly evolving cultural landscape.

Drawing from the collections of NYU Special Collections, Village People: Life, Art & Activism highlights stories, communities, and creative movements rooted in these neighborhoods.

On view in the Special Collections Gallery at Bobst Library through June 2026.

Today for #PreservationWeek we're highlighting one of our more unusual workflows in the Media Preservation Unit: screening films that come in through interlibrary loan! As the department in the library remaining with the equipment and training to project film, this has been a pleasure over the last few years as more films have been successfully interlibrary loaned.

The film on the bench this week is a bit shrunken, but we're testing it on our projector before booking a time to project it for the patron. And we'll be sure to observe the relevant but unconventional projectionists' note:

"Every few minutes, feel lightly the perforation area to make sure ... that the film has not run off its sprocket"!!

Today for #PreservationWeek, we highlighted a piece of television history: Sunrise Semester. Co-produced by NYU and CBS from 1957โ€“1982, this show brought the classroom to the living room.

Michael Grant (Assistant Director for Media Preservation) and Janet Bunde (University Archivist) took us behind the scenes of our massive preservation project, capped off by a screening of a 1970 episode on Italian Renaissance artโ€”its first viewing in over five decades!

Today, members of our team are marking #PreservationWeek by sharing an inside look at a major two-year project to conserve and digitize fragile posters from the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives. This project presents a rare opportunity to study the materials and production methods of over 200 posters from the Spanish Civil War. At the same time, it supports discovery by making these fragile artifacts available digitally for teaching and research.

Special thanks to our colleagues Lindsey Tyne (Conservation Librarian), Ana Sofia Drinovan (Special Collections Project Conservator), and Michael Stasiak (Digital Content Manager) for leading todayโ€™s discussion on conservation approaches, digitization strategies, and material observations.
