Yesterday, we had the pleasure of showcasing a series of original films made by students from @nottinghamtrentuni and @uniofnottingham at @savoy_notts.

Inspired by Nottingham's reputation for rebellion, the short films were created by Filmmaking, Animation and Graphic Design students from NTU and scored by Music Composition students from UoN. Congratulations to all of the students involved!

This was one of a series of events organised as part of the Universities for Nottingham Partnership with @bbcconcertorchestra. Still to come this week, musicians from the world-renowned orchestra will bring to life 12 original films scored and created by students from both universities in two sold-out concerts at Lakeside Arts 🎶

The final exhibitions of our 25/26 season have now come to a close.

A huge thank you to everyone who has visited the Gallery since September, and to all the artists and contributors who have shared their work, knowledge and ideas with us.

We’ll be hosting some events in the Gallery in June & July which we’ll announce shortly. We’re also looking forward to sharing a series of posts looking back at our 50+ year archive.

Our exhibition programme will reopen in September with a solo exhibition by Alan Lodge, stay tuned for further updates!

Not long left to see Our Yard: Foundations at @new_art_exchange. The mixed-reality experience explores the positive impact of immigration on the UK through community and music, and it closes on 2nd May.

It's one of the many galleries we visit to give students the opportunity to explore arts organisations in the city.

Have you visited NAE before?

We’ve teamed with Nottingham Trent University’s Nottingham School of Art & Design to launch a unique creative competition, celebrating rising local artists while creating a bespoke gift for legendary British band James.

Inspired by frontman Tim Booth’s passion for movement, mindfulness and expressive art, students were invited to submit abstract, movement-led concepts reflecting the energy and emotion of live music. The brief encouraged entrants to explore the intersection of sound and visual expression, mirroring the band’s dynamic performances.

The winning entry, Anthems for Humanity, was created by MA Illustration student Ro Williams. The piece will be presented to the band as a one-of-a-kind artwork, capturing the spirit of their music through bold, expressive techniques.

Ro Williams said: “For this piece I immersed myself in the band’s music and translated this into a range of visual mark making, a response using paint, pastels and charcoal working on canvas and paper. The work then developed digitally. I’m hoping the piece evokes a sense of the band’s music in a live setting.”

Reflecting on the local inspiration behind the work, Williams added: “I see Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena as a vessel that contains the musical experience of the city’s live shows. I liked the idea of viewing the arena from above, looking down and marvelling at the energy created by the band’s performance using the arena footprint to create the vessel shape.”

As part of the prize, Williams received hospitality tickets and for the show to enjoy with her husband, alongside official merch and credit for the artwork - offering exposure at a major live event.

The artwork was gifted to the band this evening alongside an epic bespoke cake created by our friends at The Sweet House Bakery.

This collaboration highlights the arena’s ongoing commitment to supporting grassroots creativity, providing opportunities for young artists, and celebrating Nottingham’s vibrant cultural scene, while offering visiting artists a distinctive and locally inspired welcome to the city.

Last week we welcomed some special visitors to @boningtongallery who feature in one of the photos from our current exhibition, taken by @johndeanphoto during his time as an exchange student at NTU in 1976.

They spoke to BBC East Midlands about their memories of the time and returned to the same spot to recreate the image 50 years later.

Have you seen the exhibition yet? It's free and open to all until Saturday 9 May.
