En relief (titre – fr.), Ծալք ու ծավալ (վերնագիր – հայ.), In Relief (title – en.): form that has depth and volume; by extension, that which emerges, takes shape; here, creation grounded in a territory, a geography, a mountainous landscape, a context.
We are delighted to share photos from the exhibition “En relief : créer en Arménie”, which opened on May 21st at the 2025 International @biennale_design_saintetienne in France! Invited as the country of honor of the 13th edition, the exhibition unveils the different layers of Armenia’s contemporary creative scene and highlights two prominent figures of modernist Armenian design. In dialogue with the general theme of the biennale focused on the question of resources, the exhibition explores the intimate relationship between Armenian artists and their environment and seeks to show how territory is a resource that nourishes practices and imaginations. Typographed, woven, pleated, modeled, sculpted, glazed, sketched, filmed and scanned, the curators propose a reading of Armenia through the creations of 19 artists, studios, practices, and institutes, whose resources emerge from the mountainous geography of the Armenian Highlands. The exhibition offers different entry points to the Armenian design context, highlights collaboration formats, addresses socially engaged practices, questions production scales, explores local materials, reveals lesser-known archives, and presents how the creative community develops critical and imaginative responses to today’s challenges.
Participating artists, studios, practices, institutes: @sargisantonian, @shantcharoian, @sillandsound, @dkochunts, @ghukasyan.anush, @dabavog, @studiokhachatryan, @piruzakhalapyan, @xoromat, Kamo Nigarian (1950-2011), Hripsime Simonyan (1916-1998), @gayasofo, @arigatorosian, @studio_triniti, @snkh_studio, @tumocenter, @aha_collective, @icayerevan, @berq_studio
