Hello everyone! I’m Nona Catusanu and I am a Romanian born, NYC raised DOP based in NYC! I’m excited to host @theicfc for the next two weeks. It’s an honor to be part of such a wonderful community that’s inspired me for years - thank you @theicfc for connecting so many talented people worldwide and giving us a space to explore our craft and celebrate each other’s work.

I shoot a lot of narrative, and love horror! I love the freedom of being able to play stylistically and make big, weird, bold choices to capture heavy, complicated human emotion.

I started painting and drawing at a young age and I applied to NYU Tisch on a whim with a painting portfolio. When I got into the Film & TV BFA program, it clicked - I wanted to be a cinematographer. Afterwards, I attended The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) in Prague, Czech Republic for an MFA in Cinematography.

FAMU gave me the tools to start asking the right questions, and a framework to learn the craft in a holistic and artistic way - exploring all aspects of cinematography, from the chemical and technical, to the ephemeral. I began the lifelong journey of learning how to use tangible tools to create intangible feelings.

I’m a member of @icglocal600, and joined the @the__asc Vision Mentorship program in 2021. I still approach cinematography like painting - every choice is a brushstroke. Every brushstroke plays a role in the ultimate emotional experience. And the final result is magically something greater than the sum of its parts.

Back in NYC after 3+ months. Shooting a feature in Romania was a profoundly moving experience, returning to the homeland as a DOP helped me connect to myself and my culture in unexpected ways.

Extremely grateful to director @alinaserban_official for trusting me with her story and bringing me on her journey, thankful to @microfilmromania for welcoming me and providing all the resources, and so ecstatic about the amazing crew I got to meet, work with, and learn from.

Won't miss the 4:30a alarms, but will miss those drop dead gorgeous Bucharest sunrises 🌆
