Sidsel Meineche Hansen
How does an object become erotic?
In this special interview edition of The Process, Somerset House Studios Director Marie McPartlin speaks with artist Sidsel Meineche Hansen about the making of Grumpy, her online commission for Channel.
A computer-animated interpretation of the anatomical Venus — an 18th-century wax model of a dissected woman, adorned with pearls and used to teach anatomy — Grumpy explores the intersections of gender, technology, and desire.

Sidsel Meineche Hansen’s “Grumpy” (2025) confronts viewers with fractured digital bodies and techno-feminist ghosts of Enlightenment ideas. In their essay, Bianca Stoppani unpacks the work’s uneasy intimacy – where surveillance, sexuality, and spectral labor converge. Through horror, humor, and code, Hansen reanimates the politics of representation in grotesque, glitchy form.

“Grumpy (2025) is an eviscerated yet undead killjoy — an agential feeling before being a subject.” — Bianca Stoppani, Flash Art Issue 351, Summer 2025
Commissioned for Channel, our online curated space for art, ideas and the artistic process, Sidsel Meineche Hansen’s Grumpy is a visceral new moving-image work combining melodic voice recordings, CGI animation and an 18th-century wax-casting technique to explore love, consent, and the function of bodies in digital and medical spaces.
In the film, a chilling echo of the porn industry’s production of silicone bodies for automated use is conflated with the figure of the Anatomical Venus, who is cut open to eroticise the function of the reproductive and sexual organs.

Grumpy: Body Cast in Wax, Voice, and Digital Motion
Working with an anatomist to execute the dissection of a body donated to research and a medical artist to cast the sexual and reproductive organs of this medical specimen, Sidsel Meineche Hansen (@no_sid) combines a sculpted 3D character and an anatomical wax model, as the basis for the Grumpy artwork. The film reproduces the organs and reanimates the body, partly scanned and transformed into a high-fidelity digital render, prompting questions around love in connection to agency, consent and function.
Commissioned by and developed in residence at Somerset House Studios, this new work is part of Hyper Functional, Ultra Healthy, a programme. 🔗 Watch now—link in bio.
📢 A New Online Commission- Available to Watch Via Channel
We’re thrilled to present Grumpy, a bold new work by Sidsel Meineche Hansen, commissioned by and developed in residence at Somerset House Studios as part of Hyper Functional, Ultra Healthy—our ongoing programme exploring health and well-being in the face of technological and ecological change.
Grumpy is a declaration of unrequited love, blending melodic voice recordings, CGI animation, and ceroplastic—an 18th-century technique for casting anatomical wax models. Through the figure of the Anatomical Venus, the work explores the unsettling intersections of industry, intimacy, and identity.

⟡ Baby Jesus (2023)
Sidsel Meineche Hansen @no_sid and Therese Henningsen @theresehenningsen
Presented by Sylvia Kouvali @sylvia_kouvali
The video work presents an extraordinary case of the entanglement between property, the self, and survival. In collaboration with Therese Henningsen, Hansen portrays four nuns from the Little Sisters of Jesus congregation who live in a tower block in Hoxton, London, and a shared house in Walsingham, a Catholic pilgrimage village in the UK. By taking “The Cross” and the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the nuns renounce ownership and feelings of possessiveness.

59TH VENICE BIENNALE ARTIST SIDSEL MEINECHE HANSEN FOR ART NOT GENOCIDE
“I signed the letter from ANGA, the Art Not Genocide Alliance, to exclude Israel from the Venice Biennale because I agree with the letter’s statement that any artwork that officially represents the state of Israel is an endorsement of its genocidal policies. Venice Biennale is part of the cultural industry and a total boycott of the Israeli state is needed to stop the occupation of Palestine and the genocide of the Palestinian people.” – Sidsel Meineche Hansen
Hansen participated in the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022, curated by Cecilia Alemani.
