You do all the hard work. You practice and practice, get in your 10,000 hours, and become an expert on your instrument. You play the dives and the empty clubs, pay your dues and then some. Finally, you get your big break, your one chance where the right people can hear you. Stardom is next.

And what happens? Disaster strikes. Nothing you did wrong, but in a brief moment, all those years of hard work go down the drain. You had your shot, and now it’s gone.

In the late 1960s, late-Hamilton drummer Skip Prokop made it through three separate career-ending catastrophes and came out on the other side to form one of Canada’s biggest groups of the 1970s.

The latest installment of Great Moments in Canadian Music traces Prokop's wild journey that led to the birth of Lighthouse. 🥁

We join the many artists, cultural organizations, and community members who are in mourning and disbelief over the sudden passing of trailblazing cellist and composer Cris Derksen.

Cris built a genre-defying body of work that bridged her classical training and Indigenous and Mennonite ancestry with electronic sounds to create something that was unmistakably her own.

In 2012, Cris was among the very first cohort of artists to participate in NMC’s Artist in Residence program, joining Kinnie Starr to explore our collection and create a collaborative project they called BEAMS. Years later, Cris returned to record in our studios for another project. Her fearless creativity and commitment to pushing artistic boundaries left a lasting impression on everyone who had the chance to work with her over the years.

Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and everyone who loved her.

What is an erhu? It’s an ancient two-stringed instrument, also known as a Chinese violin, with roots stretching back more than 1,000 years.

In this clip, Lemon of Calgary-based Canadian-Chinese ensemble The GCB (青蓝), tells us about the instrument's history, its distinctive construction, and the careful finger control it takes to bring it to life.
