It’s absolutely vital that artists spend time with other artists, which is why I’ve been organizing filmmakers’ lunches for about a decade now. Every three to four months, wherever I live, I turn on the Bat Signal – read: email a lot of people – and sit down with creative types who inspire and challenge me and typically make me feel like I’m inadequate in almost every way. Such is the insecurity of the artist, I find.

This month, I hosted lunch here in Naarm/Melbourne for a squad of film/TV superstars including the Cairnes Brothers (writer-directors, LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL), my old friend Sarah “Dolly” Dollard whom I met in London and is back home in Melbs (screenwriter, so much great stuff like “BRIDGERTON”), Duncan Samarasinghe (screenwriter whose new film WOLF CREEK 3 is shooting in South Australia right now!), Gabriel Bergmoser (whose new novel HIGH RISE is out now!), Nick Kozakis (director, GODLESS: THE EASTFIELD EXORCISM), Mia Kate Russell (director, PENNY LANE IS DEAD), and Tropfest 2026 winners actress and director Georgina Haig (Chery Creative Acceleration Award ) and director Jasper Sharpe (2nd place). I didn’t get to list everybody, but there were a lot of us there!

Hats off to Georgina and Duncan for being the only two people to notice me taking this pic.
