Wenn Zugehörigkeit zum Albtraum wird: Kafkas Die Verwandlung ist die wohl berühmteste Erzählung über Entfremdung, Anpassung und den Wunsch, gesehen zu werden.
Sie birgt die Frage in sich: Was passiert mit denen, die nicht mehr ins System passen? Regisseur Burhan Qurbani, bekannt für seine filmischen Überschreibungen, überträgt Kafkas Erzählung in eine Gegenwart, in der Zugehörigkeit neu verhandelt werden muss. Vier Menschen mit unterschiedlichen Perspektiven begegnen sich auf geheimnisvolle Weise. Ihre Erfahrungen spiegeln sich: die Angst vor Ausgrenzung, das Ringen um Identität in einer sogenannten pluralistischen Gesellschaft, die Frage nach Anpassung und Selbstbehauptung. Aus Kafkas Klassiker wird ein vielstimmiges Echo auf unsere Gegenwart – über Ausgrenzung, Identität und den Kampf um Sichtbarkeit.

Kafkas "Die Verwandlung" ist die wohl berühmteste Erzählung über Entfremdung, Anpassung und den Wunsch, gesehen zu werden. Sie birgt die Frage in sich: Was passiert mit denen, die nicht mehr ins System passen?
Gregor Samsa sorgt für seine Familie, ordnet sich unter, funktioniert – bis er eines Morgens als Ungeziefer erwacht. Plötzlich ist er wertlos, eine Last für die, die ihn einst brauchten. Die Familie wendet sich ab, die Gesellschaft stößt ihn aus.

🔴 Die Inszenierung von Burhan Qurbani feiert am 17.10. im Thalia Gaußstraße Premiere. Auf dem Foto seht ihr Sandra Flubacher und Sinan Güleç. Außerdem auf der Bühne stehen Camill Jammal und Cennet Rüya Voß.

how everything began.

- - - the journey of 'no beast. so fierce' ('kein tier. so wild'), started with this photo.

during the pandemic i was caught - as so many of us - at home and in a place of insecurity and uncertainty.

my last film, 'berlin alexanderplatz', had just premiered at berlinale. soon the echo of the applause faded into the silence of a world that came to a hold.

forced into a tied space in my head i felt lost. paralyzed. only when i stumbled over this image (thank you @susa_abdul for posting it on your insta 5 years ago 🙏❤️) i crawled out of my hole.

i saw this photo by @habjouqa, saw these 4 girls and thought they were playing theatre. shakespeare, maybe? no shakespeare for sure! they were playing RICHARD III, i thought. and: maybe there is a film in there -that was in 2020.

we shot the movie in the summer of 2023 and somehow the beginning of 'no beast. so fierce' remembers the photo above.

in a couple of hours is the world premiere of my latest work, 'no beast. so fierce.' ('kein tier. so wild.'), at the 75th @berlinale and i couldn't be more proud, more excited, more anxious, more exhilarated to present this film to our audience in this most fucked up of all times.

this movie has been the most intense professional journey in my career ... and the most enriching. we have started to work on the script in 2020 and now in 2025. times have caught up with us. the movie is current and anachronistic. it is taken out of time and has to be screened right fucking now.

please allow me to introduce you to the amazing talents of NO BEAST. SO FIERCE

while looking for set ideas for 'no beast. so fierce' my amazing scenographer @jagna_dobesz and i were inspired by many sources: art and film. installations and paintings. but most of all i am inspired by jagna's ability to see beauty and artistic value in the so many places. mostly the unexpected ones.

at a certain point in the development of the movie, i was feeling that i might need another visual playing field for the film. a different space to explore the narrative of 'no beast. so fierce' deeper.

jagna sent me a picture of an installation. a tent (is it a refugee tent?), some boxes (cartons with aid?), a ruined couch (the ruins of a destroyed house?) in a pool of mud (or is it oil?) and suddenly it made: click!

in this click moment we found the inner landscape of the movie's soul: a garden of loneliness and destruction... the click.

jagna sent me a picture of an installation. a tent (is it a refugee tent?), some boxes (cartons with aid?), a ruined couch (the ruins of a destroyed house?) in a pool of mud (or is it oil?) and suddenly it made: click!

while looking for set ideas for 'no beast. so fierce' my amazing scenographer @jagna_dobesz and i were inspired by many sources: art and film. installations and paintings. but most of all i am inspired by jagna's ability to see beauty and artistic value in the so many places. mostly the unexpected ones.

at a certain point in the development of the movie, i was feeling that i might need another visual playing field for the film. a different space to explore the narrative of 'no beast. so fierce' deeper.
