I wrote this with my submission:

“In 1999, on the cliffs above Polly Joke beach in Cornwall, my family and I witnessed the total solar eclipse. Daylight was stolen as darkness rushed toward us across the sea. The birds fell silent. Historically, eclipses have been experienced as moments of terror, bad omens and cosmic events in which the known order is briefly undone.

I was eleven years old and around that time I began to dream of a great wave crashing against the cliffs and swallowing our small camp. The resonance of those dreams has remained with me ever since.

This illustration seeks to convey the immensity of sea and sky. A dead star is drawn down into the watery surface: a phenomenon that obscures the world and presses upon my inner being. I have tried to exteriorize this formidable, numinous sea and sphere with great respect. Spending a year drawing infinitesimal loops and dots became a devotional practice - an offering to the unconscious Sublime.”

Apparently it’s really common for people to have recurring tidal wave dreams/nightmares. Tolkien and Jung among them.

The craft of Vanishing fore edge painting is alive and well thanks to the charming @foredgefrost1 Last Friday I spent the day in his studio painting this satisfying secret that disappears into gold. It’s very delicate work as even the slightest overly wet brush can bleed into the paper or take the gilt off. I’m a perfectionist so this suits me well. I bought a clamp to make more!!

The image is after a renaissance woodcut of the head and tail of the dragon, representing the north and south nodes in astrology, or Rahu and Ketu in the Vedic tradition. They are mathematical points that calculate the lunar and solar eclipses, referred to as “shadow planets” as they are not a material body in the sky. The dragon devours the sun and moon and casts a shadow on the moon and earth. I think it’s an apt image to vanish

I just recieved the most valuable piece of artwork in the world made by my forever love, @natnatillus of THE PRICEMASTER!!! If you know, you KNOW!!!! If not, YouTube that shit immediately!!! I love you NAT!!!! ♥️♥️♥️

Adding the final dots to this piece that I started a year ago. A friend of mine asked how do I know when it’s done - it’s just a feeling and a pleasant gaze. The battle of light and dark is over and all is in equilibrium.

Full disclosure these are probably not the last dots. The internet is so fake isn’t it

Some jobs are very special. I’ve had the great honour to help complete the Austin Osman Spare tarot deck with the task of redrawing the lost Strength card. ‼️

Spare’s eleventh Major Arcana trump was lost sometime after 1969. Luckily, the card was photographed at The Magic Circle in that same year. This blurred black and white image means that the deck can at least be considered to be iconographically complete.

The card was subsequently placed on the ‘Lost Art Register’ by The Magic Circle curators. At the same time, an imagined recto/verso colour version was produced based on the existing palette of the adjacent Major Arcana cards.

Not high quality enough for print, the deck’s expert & producer Jonathan Allan and publisher Strange Attractor Press hired me to do redraw the image. Jonathan then expertly coloured the image adding the textures that makes the card blend into the rest of the deck seamlessly.

Thankfully, I didn’t realise the magnitude of the task until after. Redrawing the great Osman Spare!? Forging his line weight to the millimetre? Using my favourite bit of equipment, a lightbox, and a fineliner pen I carefully emulated the inkier and more immediate lines you can only get with a dip pen. Her face was so blurred I had study figures in the rest of the deck (and some source material cards that Spare drew from) and find a suitable expression of strength and grace.

The deck is wonderful. A lot of work went into this it’s well worth your shelf/ shrine space.
