I appreciate that this crew is always down for whatever idea comes in my head. I’ve been wanting to put this line from @snarkypuppy ‘s What About Me into You Are Good for years now and I finally got the chance to do it.

My bro @jehreeus sent this to me a long time ago. My brain instantly started running with ideas but I had to wait until I had all the needed instruments in my arsenal bc Madison’s voice is Gorgeous and I wanted to do justice to her version. Really proud of how this turned out... Enjoy!

This song is gorgeous, and beautifully sung by @cynthiaerivo . But the words....so hopeful, so utopian...almost mock my reality. As much as I wanted to just write pretty music to this, my heart wouldn’t let me. There was a deeper, more authentic story yearning to be told. I composed the music from the perspective I know best: a black male in America.

Though the original context of this was written for West Side Story and the characters, desires to escape the nightmares of a gang lifestyle, I can never escape my skin. No matter my degree, accolades, talents or work ethic. I’m still black. This work represents the innocence stripped as one grows up and learns they are in the worlds eyes. Because I can guarantee almost every African American remembers the experience that told them they were “black”.

Dr. King said he’d been to the mountaintop and declared a dream of being free and equal. There are so many who are eager to tell black people how MLK would’ve acted in today’s times, and are equally lost in the irony of how much they sound just like their parents telling him how to act.

My hope is not waiting in the world to change their minds.And it’s certainly not placed into the events of tomorrow. Nations will fall; kingdoms will end. I don’t know if there will ever be a place for me here. But I wholeheartedly believe that The King who lives forever has a place prepared for me.

Then this fall, I got a surprise call from @bjamalfelder asking me to write some strings for BSU’s Christmas concert. I thought it was dope bc I love arranging Christmas music. BUT when he said I was going to be arranging to Samara’s songs and she was coming to sing them??!! I almost cried lol. Super grateful to get this call and get the chance to meet one of my favorite artists😭🙏🏾

Special musical moments from last year:

1) @john.stoddart and @ibrybrax brought me in to help arrange some tunes for a Juneteenth celebration. First time having a real orchestra play my arrangements!

2) I always enjoy working with the guys (@nelsonjacksoniii @miguelgandelman & @aspears (RIH bro 🕊️🙏🏾) on @maskedsingerfox . One of my favorite tunes by Ray Charles.

3) I’ve been wanting to conduct a real 🎻section for the longest time. @royznoyz gave me that chance!👊🏾

4) Got to play with some HEAVY hitters behind @korynhawthorne and a few other artists

5) Got to work with @mrkeyemupceo and @michaelbethanyofficial to create some dope Christmas arrangements

6) @royznoyz tasked me with doing a flip on the classic “Emmanuel” by @jasonwhiteco and @therealnormanhutchins . Truncated version but may post a full version later. Band blazed this one!
