The Ground Zero of the rave smiley face. 🟡✨

This is a 1987 prototype for the Shoom membership card, representing the exact moment the yellow smiley face was introduced to dance music culture.

The second slide is the 1988 version of the membership card. This actual card belonged to @mrdeejayrandom , a 2x Technics/DMC champion.

Before it became a global symbol worn by millions, before the stadium-sized raves, and before the media panic of the Second Summer of Love, there was just this hand-drawn logo by @georgegeorgiou21 for Danny Rampling’s legendary @shoom_london club night.

Look closely at the second “O”, that is the very first iteration of the acid house smiley.

While fashion designer Barnzley Armitage had been wearing retro 1970s smiley tees around London, it was Shoom adopting the symbol on their early gear and membership cards that forever fused the image with the euphoria, unity, and sound of acid house.
