I’m saddened…
I was scammed some months ago, and ever since then, it has been a painful and frustrating journey trying to get justice. After several efforts, the scammer’s phone number was eventually tracked down and his exact location was identified. At that point, I thought the hardest part was over, and that the Nigeria Police Force would step in to do their job, effect the arrest and begin investigations and prosecution.

Unfortunately, that has not been the case. Instead of moving forward with the arrest, I was told by the Ajah Police Station, where the fraud case was lodged in from the beginning, that I still need to “mobilize” the officers before they can take any action (Traveling outside Lagos State to the location of the scammer). In other words, unless I provide the means of transportation or transportation, feeding and accommodation for them, they are unwilling to carry out the responsibility they are legally and morally bound to perform.

Even if the amount I was scammed is ₦500,000, does that mean I should be left without justice? Does the value of the crime determine whether the police should do their job or not? Fraud is fraud, theft is theft, and crime is crime, whether the amount involved is ₦5,000, ₦500,000, or even more.

It is both disheartening and discouraging to realize that, in this country, justice often feels like something you have to pay for, rather than a right that should be protected by law enforcement. Even after months of waiting, with the scammer clearly within reach, I am left stranded and disappointed because of corruption and negligence within the system.
Experiences like this weaken the trust ordinary citizens should have in the police. They make victims of crime feel not only cheated by the fraudsters but also abandoned by the very institutions meant to protect them.
