Grey Villet: Farmers Randy & Lois Oster speak with lawyer activist Sarah Vogel on their farm, which is facing foreclosure, North Dakota, 1982
In a 1983 essay on a collapse of the farm economy, Grey Villet summed up its meaning with this visual metaphor used in the opening spread.
In the 1970's, high agricultural exports, increasing land values and price supports had produced a 700% increase in farm borrowing. But by the 80's, a glut in production and decreasing farm exports, a bushel of wheat brought less on the market than the cost of growing it. Caught in the downward spiral of debt and income loss, hundreds of family farms were being foreclosed.
Today, American agriculture is facing one of its most challenging periods in a generation. Farmers face economic challenges due to trade and tariff policies, which have exacerbated a farm crisis.
"America The Beautiful "is an Exhibition of compelling and provocative photographs illustrating America, American life, and the American people as the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday.

John Dominis/Life Picture Collection: Chinese Premiere Chou En Lai and US President Richard Nixon toast each other, Peking, 1972
Vintage gelatin silver print, please contact the Gallery for details
On February 21, 1972, President Nixon met with Chairman Mao Tse-tung. After a modest reception at Peking airport, the president was formally welcomed at a lavish banquet held in the Great Hall of the People and hosted by Prime Minister Chou En-lai. Using one of Mao's own quotations, Mr Nixon said it was time to seize the day and seize the hour "for our two peoples to rise to the heights of greatness which can build a new and better world". There followed an elaborate round of toasts, in which the 800 guests at the banquet wandered from table to table clinking thimble-sized glasses.

The American flag has long stood as a unifying emblem of democracy, freedom, and national identity. Its meaning shifts over time and in different contexts, influenced by political events, social movements, and individual interpretations.

Today is #Mother'sDay in the US, a celebration honoring the mother of the family or individual, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
“This photograph is exceptional. A young woman holding a precarious load on her head, moving onward, suckles an infant bound to her body securely in cloth, in the traditional fashion, while intensely concentrating - on her steps? She cannot afford to fall. Or, lose her precious baggage. (Remember, the caption states that there is fighting and an attack going on.) She is the central subject of the image where everything is circular, antiquely feminine, primordially important. She must make it.” --Marianne Fulton, photography curator, editor, archivist and writer

The Supreme Court’s decision to upend a key provision of the Voting Rights Act has plunged the nation into a new era of partisan conflict.

Today is the final day to visit us at The Photography Show Presented by @aipadphoto , booth B10 in the Park Avenue Armory.
"in the booth is a group of images from Diné (Navajo) photographer Eugene Tapahe’s “Jingle Dress Project,” which aims to bring global attention to Native American issues, including land acknowledgment, women’s rights and, most urgently, the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). A powerful image of fierce Native American sisters standing against a bright blue sky, dressed in traditional, colorful clothing—resolute and determined as they face the unknown horizons of their culture—is an absolute standout of this edition." - Observer review, link in bio for more

"In the booth of Santa Fe-based Monroe Gallery of Photography, whose mission is to champion precisely those images from the 20th and 21st Centuries that exist at the singular intersection of art and journalism" Observer review of the @aipadphoto Photography Show, on through Sunday
"Dozens of observers, migrant advocates, and members of the press show up each day to witness the arrests, which often take place with little regard for due process. It might not even matter how a judge rules in someone’s case. Migrants seem to be in shock as agents approach; family members might scream or sob as their loved one is taken away."
