On 6 May, the pre-premiere of Cooking Up Democracy, the latest film about Taiwan by Monika Treut (@moniktreut), was screened at Filmpodium (@filmpodium) in the presence of the director.
The German writer, director, and producer received the Golden Apple 2026 Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Pink Apple Film Festival (@pinkapplefilmfestival). A pioneer of queer cinema, Monika Treut has been shaping international cinema since the 1980s. Her work openly and radically explores sexuality, identity, and desire through a self-determined lens.
Since 2002, Treut has worked extensively in Taiwan on both fiction and documentary films. Her latest work focuses on democracy — a subject closely connected to Taiwan’s internationally recognised achievements in freedom and democratic development. Since 2000, Taiwan has experienced several peaceful democratic transfers of power through elections.
After several research trips to Taiwan, Monika completed filming in just three and a half weeks. Guided by the director’s own voice-over narration, the documentary takes viewers through Taiwan’s streets and into the everyday lives of its protagonists, who share their personal stories and experiences within the country’s democratic movement.
Led by former Digital Minister Audrey Tang, the film explores a vibrant network of activists, queer voices, and feminist thinkers shaping a pluralistic vision of democracy.
Through intimate camerawork — often using smaller cameras and even an iPhone — the film captures Taiwan’s landscapes, traditions, spiritual festivities, and the protagonists’ daily lives with remarkable closeness and sensitivity.
The Q&A session afterwards sparked a warm and thoughtful exchange with the audience.
The film is currently touring international film festivals before its regular cinema release. When asked about her next project, Monika Treut laughed and said she preferred not to reveal it yet — for fear of bad luck.

Gratulation zum Golden Apple, liebe Monika. 💛

Ecstatic to be in Hamburg! So many great memories of many performances and teaching sexuality workshops with Dieter Jarzombec here over the years the decades. I owe Hamburg for so much.
Tonight Beth and I will be at Alabama Kino/Kampnagel for a special screening of Monica Treut's film, "My Father is Coming." One of Monica's classics, which I am actually 'acting in.' I never liked acting but Monica directed me so well. Come tonight and send yr Hamburg friends please. Although most of our friends and the hip people here are going to see Peaches show tonight. We saw it in San Fran! So rcxxxccellent! Peaches and her team came to see our film last night and after the film we schmoozed with her amazing Brazillian friends who are dancing in her show. (Pictured) Sorry I don't know their names cuz my brain is fried.
Thanks to Cassils and Monica for being in our post film discussion. (Pictured tired) And to Alabama Kino/Kampnagel for generously adding us to their transss arts festival as allies and being generous hosts. It was a super love fest! And tonight will be fun. Xx
Wish you were here.
