Dear cabaret,
Lately I’ve been applying to a lot of shows and festivals. These choices were motivated not only by work but also by my will of being as visible as possible in as many spaces as possible as a trans woman. And it happens that cabaret and burlesque festivals are one of the biggest plateform I can reach to right now.
I think it’s necessary to have visibility for marginalized groups also in the cabaret and burlesque scene. But it seems difficult to be visible lately and I feel like these spaces and the ones that work in it tend to forget quickly their roots and forget that they are not protected from being oppressive themselves. All white, all cis, all skinny, all straight, all valid line-ups and productions...
We tend to forget that these spaces were rooted in resilience and built by marginalized people.
On the transphobic side for example, and by being transphobic I don’t mean misgendering someone : I mean not booking trans artist, I mean positive fueled transphobia, weirdly putting a trans narrative on your MC routine before annoucing your only trans artist..
It’s like cabaret is gentrifying itself although the freaks, the queers, the POCs and the crips were always hand in hand with these histories and spaces.
Cabaret comes from the refused ones, the revoked arts, and we can’t erase the identities it protected for centuries before us… Marinka, Bambi, Josephine Bakers, Annie Jones… By protecting these identities, cabaret has been a form of resistance through art for us but also a form of revolution through it’s gathering and community against the world.
We still need these spaces.
Being not transphobic/racist/fatphobic/etc is one thing, but being anti-transphobia/anti-racism/anti-fatphobia/etc is another one. By not actively commemorating and perpetuating it’s heritage and resilience we are indirectly participating to the rise of fascism today. Wow, that escalated quickly, you okay love ?

PINS & NEEDLES - PARIS
We’re back baby ! But now this it’s at @__cirque_electrique__ in their brand new Château Tigre.

I don't need to be visible if that means to exist without dignity.
But I need you
to book us,
to support us,
to defend us,
to fund us,
to protest with us,
to advocate for us,
to get on the streets for us,
to stop going somewhere for us,
to start a family fight for us,
to lose friendships for us,
to fight for us,
to arm us,
to cry for us,
to hug us,
to grieve us,
to celebrate us,
I need you
to say you love us,
to educate yourself about us,
to hang out publicly with us,
to really make choices
thinking about us,
to throw a brick for us.
I need you
to not forget us.

Just a doll hanging out her laundry. Making sure the chores are done and over with.
Memories of @thesassycabaret by Déborah Gigliotti !
Bruxelles, see you soon for @cabaretmademoiselle !! ❤️
Show Girl Drama. ❤️
This act is inspired by the most commonly shared
references of burlesque, a signature act & and a love letter the history of burlesque.
Pheasant feather fans, rinestoned corset lined in red, mooving and powerful music, showgirl poses and attitudes, cheeky teases and fierce faces : a somewhat traditionnal act with a burning attitude. Using the magic of entertainment & glamour burlesque holds as a heritage, this act showcases the pillars of this art as a way to self proclaim and empower my queer body.
A striking vision of a naked nymph princing around and slowly turning red. Is it the drama or the tip of her feathers that teases you ?

About one year ago, I was bleeding on the stage of @alpes_burlesque_festival ! And today, it's their big premiere... So gutteeeed I couldnt come !!! I really hope to be there soon again. 🥺
Beautiful snapchot by @yassinelemonnier !
Grateful for how this space was building for us. 💕
