Slide 2 is my new résumé :)

Eternally grateful for the opportunity to transcribe the living history that is @iamfreedom 🙏🏿 I always leave our sessions inspired to be more of who I’ve been called to be. Thank you for *everything*.

To be loved is to be witnessed! On the last day of National Poetry Month, we uplift the poets—who embody the art of poetry, and who capture the art of the world.

A huge thank you to Monique Mitchell (@mnqmtchll) for this crucial work and art, and for highlighting fellow poet Brian Sonia-Wallace (@rentpoet), the newest Poet Laureate of Los Angeles!

Transformation Arts and DMST are so pleased to welcome Monique Mitchell (@mnqmtchll ) as one of two artists in residence at DMST Atelier for our inaugural AGAPE Artist Residency.

An interdisciplinary artist, Monique worksin spoken word, painting, collage, sound, and moving images to explore Black temporality, cosmology, and collective memory by placing Black history in conversation with mythology and astrophysics. She began her career as a spoken word poet, performing and facilitating workshops with institutions including The Getty, LACMA, MOCA, and the Hammer. Her experience as a poet informs her visual practice, where she creates blackout poems from astrophysics texts written by white male scientists. Through the process of erasure, she creates blackout poems that superimpose a Black voice onto traditionally exclusionary spaces. This approach examines authorship, absence, and reclamation.

During her time at Agape, Monique will develop weave, a multimedia installation incorporating sound, video portraiture, assemblage, and text-based painting that frames intergenerational Black dialogue as necessary infrastructure for a liberated Black future. Guided by the Akan principle of Sankofa, returning to retrieve what was lost in order to move forward, weave asks: What futures become possible when ancestral wisdom and youthful imagination are woven together to form new self-definitions & mythologies?

“In the shadow of the reactionary post-Reconstruction era, one had to act in order to stave off the reenchantment of the past.” - Habiba Ibrahim and Badia Ahad, Black Temporality in Times of Crisis

This story starts the way most of my favorite stories do, with a phone call from @dianelubylane 🌟

In Summer of 2024, Di told me about this new program she was launching with @getlitpoet , “Creative Career Lab”, where ppl ages 18-28 could receive FREE career training that will help them land full time roles in the creative media field. I asked if I could volunteer, and she invited me to teach it with her.

There, I met @jeremyhsing & @plannet.angel, two superstars who were destined to shine with or without the program. They were/are hungry, humble, & soulful artists.

Jeremy sent me a script that Fall (@bigballerboyfilm ) and it was so good, it inspired me to finish a project I had set aside for years.

The way J shows up in the world reminded me that dreams only serve us when we are obedient to them; when we water them everyday with action.

A year later, @tde.films was launched. Jeremy’s favorite things? Cinema. & TDE. And guess what? turns out TDE saw in him, what he has seen in them all along.

I can’t wait for the world to meet the characters I fell in love with 2 years ago. & I can’t wait to enter all the universes Jeremy and Ángel will create moving forward.

You two make me so proud!!! 🤍

Thank you @dianelubylane & @getlitpoet for always being at the epicenter of my fav experiences. Thank you @jeremyhsing & @plannet.angel for existing. & thank you @tde.films @dangerookipawaa & @iamhwood for investing in emerging voices.

Humbled.

Thank you @peacegina & @sankofadotorg for the invitation. Sharing space with artists & activists who have informed my voice & my vision makes me remember my 12 year old self. I was so dissatisfied with society, contemplating things like environmental racism before I even had the language. Dolores Huerta’s “Sí, se puede” was my mantra. I would research lyricists like @mrchuckd & @alishaheed who spoke truth to power, and made it sound fly. Danny Glover, like Harry Belafonte, showed me being an artist means using your platform for social change. & years later, I would witness @obeygiant quite literally deliver HOPE to a nation.

I understand my role as an artist in this climate. & it’s to create: new images, new stories, new pathways. I’ll always answer that call.

Had the most incredible time in Vietnam. Climbed mountains. Sent prayers into the water. Rested!

Thank you for creating the most epic itinerary which allowed me to shut my brain off for weeks (as much as this Virgo can 👀🤭😅). I love you and I’m so proud of you for gtf @signedjaymarie ❤️

Grateful for the stillness
that allows me to tune into the Love
that never leaves.

Grateful for the Love
that never leaves.

Grateful for this magical moment with a butterfly. (Which survived, as butterflies often do ♾️)

Spent the first day of the year forest bathing with family 💚

The teens in slide 5 asked me to join their TikTok but didn’t teach me the choreo so I was just going off vibes 😂
