Let me take you inside the club. The idea for this sequence was to drop the audience into a whole new world, a space where everyone was going to be, let them FEEL it before they understood it.
I built the lighting around three colors, amber, cyan, and red.
We opened on a 360 trinity shot by the incredible @goingsteadi.inc We wanted the entrance into this world to feel alive from the very first frame.
The club had its own mover lights that we hardly used. My workhorse was the Ayrton Diablo. We placed them in specific spots throughout the space, we also rigged 3 Diablos onto truss towers on wheels so we could move them around, we kept them kind of at eye level, always chasing the interaction between the light and the camera, so having those movers flare the lens over and over gave movement and dynamism in every single frame.
I used Tiffen Black Fog filters, My intention was to bloom the bright sources while keeping the shadows rich and deep.
To break up those black club walls I rigged Astera Titans vertically along them, giving me highlights and separation behind the actors so they never disappeared into shadow. For the exterior crane shot, we took out all city light and lit every inch of that street ourselves. With a Techno we boomed down off the train. The club had these gooseneck fixtures that were LED, but we couldnt control color or intensity and they werent strong enough, the art department swapped all of them and installed fixtures that could take Astera Sola bulbs, that way I had enough exposure AND I could carry the same color story from inside the club to the street. Two Q10s in blackbirds anchored the far end. I had the fixtures themselves in frame, but you cant really tell, because the black fog blooms the source enough that the light just feels natural. None of this happens alone. A frame like this is built by a crew that puts their hearts into it, I have to thank Gaffer @photon_society Rig Gaffer Tony Henly Dim Op.
