Frames In Echo # 4: In 2015, I took a road trip to SLC with a couple friends to photograph Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.If memory serves, it may have been the first time I’d ever traveled out of state to see a band, and it was certainly the first time I’d shot specifically for them.I’d been a fan for 15 years and was lucky to connect with Leah who arranged the pass to shoot AAA, an invitation I would learn was rarely granted to others.

The band were incredibly gracious, letting us hang out in their trailer before the set, wander around the backstage area where I recall seeing Father John Misty and not having a clue.My friend Cortney and I were sitting there with our cameras out, her cleaning her lenses, when Pete walked by and muttered, a little nervously, “oh…cameras.” We quickly explained we were just cleaning them, not attempting to intrude.

Eventually, after Cortney wondered how I ever managed to take an in-focus photo with such a dusty lens, I finally cleaned mine properly.That’s when I noticed Pete had settled into the trailer doorway, smoking and tuning his guitar.Inspired, I quickly lifted the camera and snapped a single frame “just to test the clean glass” taking a shot that I’ve loved ever since.It’s a simple image, maybe even forgettable to some, but to me it holds the reason I take photographs at all: taking the kind of photos I’d want of my favorite artists, the ones I’d frame on my own wall. I didn’t need to see his face, I know who it is. For me, it’s about that one quiet, unguarded second.

After that, I was lucky enough to become friends with BRMC, and they invited me out to shoot more shows…something I still wish I could tell my 16-year-old self. Years later, I caught a kind of echo of this moment… @peterhayes again, before a show, tuning his guitar and having a smoke (photo 2). And these remain two of my favorite images of all time.

Frames in Echo # 3: Over a decade ago, I was introduced to Jeremy Berman, the unmatched drum builder behind Q Drum Co. It didn’t take long before my husband bought a kit from him, and we had a genuine friendship. Somewhere in that early time, he generously connected me to one of my favorite artists I’d hoped to photograph… a lasting relationship for which I’ll always be grateful.

Hoping to give back, I offered to stop by his shop in San Pedro to photograph him at work. He welcomed me without hesitation, though I remember some disappointment when I arrived as he couldn’t work on his own Q drums that day. Instead, he was in the middle of a rush job, repairing and installing lighting inside acrylic drums for Adrian Young of No Doubt. To me, that moment was a quiet demonstration of how essential he was, and how lightly he carried that importance. Here was someone trusted by some of the world’s biggest musicians for building, repairing, traveling as a tech, while still investing fully in his own work.

I had never seen drums built that way before, and felt lucky to document someone so widely regarded as one of the best in the world. Jeremy had spent many years building for OCDP, and through Q, he began carving out something distinctly his own… bespoke, metal drums handmade with an unmistakable precision that I was privileged to witness.

Even if these images from that day couldn’t serve to promote Q (I did return another time), they hold something more enduring… a reverence and reminder that the finest work comes from a person, not a machine. These photographs have become especially precious since Jeremy lost a six-month battle with stage 4 stomach cancer in 2023. His passing rippled through a community that truly tried to help him, a loss made heavier by the devastating litigation his family continues to face. Over time, I’ve come across my images of him in places I never expected, grateful I was able to make something that is part of his memory.

Jeremy was always on tour or in the shop, so I never got to spend as much time with him as I would have liked, but his presence meant so much to me. He was the very best. And today would have been his 48th birthday.

Frames In Echo # 2:I remember back in 2018 I was on the bus for a few dates with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club while they were opening for #DepecheMode.We were in Sacramento at the Golden 1 Center when, from somewhere up the chain, I got the okay to shoot Depeche Mode, AND a little beyond the standard first three songs.

I was ushered behind the stage and up a set of stairs to grab a different angle.Drummer Christian Eigner knew I’d be there but I had a strong sense that the rest of the band wasn’t expecting a photographer behind them.I kept worrying that Dave Gahan might turn around and spot me with a less than welcoming look.I think I was actually quite sparing as far as what I took… as if they could hear the shutter.Still, I had to try to capture the energy.

I went ahead shooting for what felt like 30 seconds but was probably closer to three or four minutes. I remember thinking about how huge the arena looked.It’s not a vantage point I get very often but it was overwhelming to see what the artist sees.People’s faces are a lot more clear than we might think as audience members.At some point, Dave Gahan caught my lens. Even if the shot doesn’t feel perfect with keyboards in the way, I was very grateful to have snapped this particular second.I was likely grinning behind the camera, as I’ve been told I do, and have also been told it’s hard not to mirror.
