Armed with giant hinged contraptions, the four performers of Decoder Ensemble repeatedly fracture the moment with thunderous cracks as if staking out time itself. Swelling lighting and maximalist electronic sound rise from darkness and silence only to be swallowed again. Threaded through is Brailey’s disembodied voice, screwed down to a sepulchral register, intoning reflections on immanence, centrist pussyfooting, awe, relapse, the angelic, powerlessness, love and extinction.

One of my favourite sets I’ve ever performed, recorded live at @no_st0ne / @pankeculture.
I figured this was a good opportunity to challenge myself live with a lot of metric modulations and polyrhythmic mixing. I played some triplet dubstep, guarachero, maloya which is (always?) in 6/4, some beat-chopped 3/4 or 6/8 edits which truncate tracks I like into different tempi, plus other weird stuff (triplet bubbling!) to really discombobulate and, as a <relatively> sober nightlife person, lead the crowd toward a head/body-space made conscious by rhythmic precarity. All this takes a LOT of planning but I think it’s worth it. I still couldn’t stop myself from playing ballroom into brostep at the end. Gender and sexuality-wise that’s definitely saying something.
Also I got a rewind playing Bar9 - that was funny.
