Following his acclaimed documentary CHIRINO, filmmaker Jorge A. Soliño adds a new piece to the puzzle of Cuban culture in diaspora: NARANJO. The 43rd Miami Film Festival, presented by Miami Dade College, delivered another memorable edition, and the U.S. Premiere of Melodrama, directed by Andrés Farías, became one of the standout moments of the event.

The film tells the tender yet courageous story of Sonia (Mercedes Morales), a Dominican widow who, after retreating into grief, finds her life unexpectedly awakened through a passionate connection with Aimé (Jimmy Jean-Louis), a Haitian construction worker. Their romance unfolds against the backdrop of deep-rooted historical, cultural, and social tensions between their two communities, turning personal love into a radical act of defiance.

The screening room was packed, with Haitian and Dominican community members filling nearly every seat in a vibrant South Florida turnout. The energy in the theater was excitement as attendees anticipated the film, and the screening concluded with warm, sustained applause. Before the screening, we had the opportunity to interview director Andrés Farías, lead actors Sarah Jorge León and Jimmy Jean-Louis.

Everyone we spoke with expressed a deep hope that Melodrama would help bring Haitians and Dominicans closer together. They spoke passionately about using a tender love story as the vehicle to tell a bigger, more complex tale, one that confronts difficult issues of history, prejudice, and division on the island of Hispaniola while highlighting shared humanity. The director and cast repeatedly emphasized that love, in its simplest and most powerful form, could serve as a bridge across long-standing cultural and social barriers.

Following the film, the team hosted a heartfelt Q&A session in which guests and audience members praised the film’s brilliant execution and effective handling of sensitive themes. It was touching to see the cast and crew so personally invested in the film’s message of connection and healing.

A packed and enthusiastic crowd gathered at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex for the world premiere of #DualCitizen, Rachelle Salnave’s witty and heartfelt documentary, as part of the 43rd @MiamiFilm Festival.

The screening, part of the festival, drew a packed house of festival-goers, Haitian-American families, and community members eager to experience this intimate story of identity, exile, and reconciliation. The room buzzed with anticipation before the lights dimmed and stayed warm with laughter and recognition long after the credits rolled.

Dual Citizen follows Salnave and her father, Edouard, a proud New York Republican who fled political exile from Haiti in the 1960s and swore he would never return. For over 50 years, he stayed true to that vow. But Haiti’s 2012 constitutional amendment, which finally allowed dual nationality, changed everything: Edouard would need to officially reclaim his Haitian citizenship so his daughter could reclaim hers.

Audience members nodded and chuckled throughout, clearly seeing reflections of their own families in the on-screen arguments about politics, belonging, and what “home” truly means. It never feels like a lecture; it feels like sitting in a living room with relatives, listening to parents and kids hash out the complicated realities of diaspora life.

After the screening, director @Rachelle_salnave joined for a special Q&A, generously sharing insights into the making of the film and answering questions from an engaged crowd. It was a true community moment, one that highlighted why the Miami Film Festival remains such a vital platform for stories like this. Congratulations @rachelle_salnave 🔥🇭🇹
