It’s been a month since I was let go from my job as an Associate Editor at Out, and I’m seeking freelance or staff writing and interview opportunities in pop culture journalism, cultural criticism, or film reviews. I have 14 years of experience covering movies, music, television, pop culture, and queer culture, with a focus on lesbian and transgender topics.

Over my career so far, I have written 12 cover stories across 3 magazines, contributed to 5 GLAAD Media Award wins, and was honored to vote in the Sight & Sound Greatest Films of All Time 2022. For the past 3 years, I have covered the Sundance Film Festival, and as a result, at least 8 films have used quotes from my reviews in their trailers and marketing.
If anyone knows of freelance or staff opportunities, especially involving movie reviews, please forward them to me. I can be reached here or at meyrude@gmail.com.

This is hard to say, but after nearly six wonderful years, my career at out.com is over. Last Friday I was one of several writers, editors, and staff members laid off from equalpride.

I’m proud to have been able to highlight and champion lesbian, trans, and qtpoc voices and contribute to queer journalism and criticism in these times when queer media is so often under attack.
I’ll always be proud to have had 12 magazine covers in my time at equalpride, including 8 featuring trans woman, and to have represented out.com at the Sundance Film Festival the last three years.

I would’ve loved to work there another twenty years. I will forever be thankful for my time there and to the many people who helped me become a better writer, journalist, and editor. I wish nothing but the best for equalpride and hope that it can continue to produce quality queer journalism when it’s needed most.

I’m not sure what my next move is just yet, but for now I can be contacted at meyrude.com

"'The Wedding Banquet' had me belly laughing and full-body sobbing. This is what real love and family look like. In a time when half the country is trying to dictate what families can look like, 'The Wedding Banquet' throws all of that out with its radical approach to love, connection, and joy," writes Out's @MeyRude. ✨

If you're familiar with the original 'The Wedding Banquet' film, it becomes clear that this is more of a reshaping than a remake. Director Andrew Ahn worked with James Schamus, who co-wrote the 1993 original, on this new script — managing to keep the heart of that film while recentering it within modern queer culture and relationship dynamics. Through this 2025 reimagining of 'The Wedding Banquet,' Ahn shows how much he's matured as a director by using his all-star cast to full effect. 🤩

‘Emilia Pérez’ is sparking conversations about trans representation. “The experience of trans lesbians is so often erased from media, and here, we finally have a trans lesbian expressing how it feels,” writes Out’s Mey Rude. In our latest opinion piece, @meyrude explores why this film breaks the mold with its complex portrayal of a trans character and addresses critiques about its representation. “I think the movie actually is some of the best trans representation we’ve ever had on the big screen,” Mey shares. 🎬✨

Join the conversation and see why this film is a breakthrough for trans visibility at the #linkinbio.
