Concluding this week, Jane O’Neill’s Bourke Street Leisure Centre pays tribute to the Fitzroy Swimming Pool in Melbourne’s inner north, reimagined through an immersive, large-scale installation. Monumental in presence, the work brings together a facsimile of the iconic Aqua Profonda sign—positioned at the pool’s depths—with a series of tiled panels crafted from repurposed denim, evoking an aerial view of the pool. Together, these elements reflect the artist’s intimate, lived perspective, drawn from her daily routine.

Void_Melbourne is excited to announce our first exhibition for 2026 with Melbourne-based artist Jane O'Neill's Bourke Street Leisure Centre.

Please join us to celebrate the opening this Saturday, January 31, 2026, from 4pm.

The exhibition is a tribute to the Fitzroy Swimming Pool in Melbourne’s inner north, reimagined through an immersive, large-scale installation. Monumental in presence, the work brings together a facsimile of the iconic Aqua Profonda sign—positioned at the pool’s depths—with a series of tiled panels crafted from repurposed denim, evoking an aerial view of the pool. Together, these elements reflect the artist’s intimate, lived perspective, drawn from her daily routine.

Void_Melbourne extends warm wishes to our friends, supporters, and artists for a prosperous and adventurous year ahead.

Our 2026 program launches on 31 January with Bourke Street Leisure Centre, Jane O’Neill’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition is a tribute to the Fitzroy Swimming Pool in Melbourne’s inner north, reimagined through an immersive, large-scale installation. Monumental in presence, the work brings together a facsimile of the iconic Aqua Profonda sign—positioned at the pool’s depths—with a series of tiled panels crafted from repurposed denim, evoking an aerial view of the pool. Together, these elements reflect the artist’s intimate, lived perspective, drawn from her daily routine.

Made in the late nineties amidst an atmosphere of people struggling with addiction, this work was an investigation into ways we can create repetition with decreasing means. Formally, the work assumes the familiar motif of the swimming pool line and plays with the metaphorical possibilities of the seraph. More broadly it points to the addictive nature of our desire to fix things, or others or ourselves.

Acquisition News: Congratulations to gallery artist Jane O'Neill on the recent placement of Kalev Waterpark within the Artbank collection.

A sequence of vertical strips from jeans evokes the haphazard lanes of a swimming pool. Employing a quilt-making technique similar to early “Waggas” which were sewn from remnant materials, this work employs denim to suggest a body of water. Throughout the production and wearing of denim, it passes through many hundreds of litres of water. Over time the fabric bears the rippled patterns and markings of water stains. Rather than paint I work with denim, both for its ready availability and for its proximity in colour and texture to water. The work connects with the textiles we wear; the social circumstances involving their production; and the environmental effects of their use. By positioning the pool on a vertical plane the work recalls both the psychological changes we make as we enter water and the narrative capacity for textiles to reveal their origins.

Jane's third solo exhibition with Void_Melbourne opens in January 2026.

Acquisition News: Congratulations to gallery artist Jane O'Neill on the recent placement of Kalev Waterpark within the Artbank collection.
