Meadow Arts
An inspirational contemporary visual art charity delivering ambitious and accessible projects in unexpected, often rural places. #ArtPlacesIdeas

One week to go until BorderLands opens at @hay_castle.
Opening 15 May – 31 August 2026, BorderLands brings together artists from across the world whose work explores borders, boundaries, identity, belonging and connection.
Presented in partnership with Hay Castle, the exhibition responds to a time of increasing division and political tension, asking how artists can help us rethink the physical, cultural and emotional lines that shape our lives.
Through photography, installation, film, sculpture and painting, the exhibition invites us to imagine new ways of living together beyond separation and exclusion.
Artist include: Larry Achiampong (@larryachiampong), Henna Asikainen (@henna.art_nature_and_belonging), Iwan Bala, Maya Rose Edwards (@mre_arts), Peter Finnemore (@peter.finnemore), Leo Fitzmaurice (@leo.fitzmaurice), Ghazel (@ghazel______), Shilpa Gupta (@shilpaguptastudio), Mark Houghton (@dmhoughton), Gabriella Hirst (@gabriellahirst), Verity Howard (@verityhowardceramics), Charlie Hurcombe, Hilary Jack (@hilaryjack_), Delaine Le Bas (@dedelebas), André Lichtenberg (@andrelichtenberg), Daniel MacCarthy (@daniel_maccarthy), Helene Muheim (@helenemuheim), Lucy+Jorge Orta (@lucyjorgeorta), Sally Payen (@sallypayen), Corinne Silva (@corinne_silva) and Donovan Wylie.
We'll be shining a spotlight on each artist as the exhibition unfolds so stay tuned to find out more.

⚡ Andy Harper (@isandyharper)× Meadow Arts (@meadowarts)
⚡ Kim Thompson (@kimthompson.art) × Herefordshire Museums & Galleries

⚡ Marley Starskey Butler (@marleystarskeybutler) × Arts Collective (@artscollectivenn)
⚡ Natasha Taheem (@Natasha.Taheem) × Hub (@hubsleaford)
Artists will develop new works (May 2026 – March 2027) exploring the cultural, historic, and geographical identities of the Midlands through a wide range of digital practices. The OttM commissioning model pairs artists with organisations from neighbouring Midlands regions, encouraging collaboration, exchange, and new relationships across the sector.
Artists were selected with the OttM Advisory Group, a group of Midlands-based artists, arts workers, and audience representatives whose insight and lived experience helped shape an equitable and artist-centred selection process.
A huge thank you to Advisory Group members Amrit Doll, Christopher Samuel, Nahashon Kimata, Tierra Davis, Ayesha Jones, Farwa Moledina, Kevin Hunt and Tanya Raabe-Webber for their care, generosity, and commitment. Conversations have been supported by facilitator Ania Bas.
The programme is led collaboratively by CVAN EM (@cvaneastmidlands) & CVAN WM (@cvanwestmidlands), hosted respectively by New Art Exchange (@new_art_exchange) and DASH (@dashdisabilityarts).
Ode to the Midlands is funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England (@acegrams).

BorderLands (15 May – 31 August 2026) presented by Meadow Arts and Hay Castle, brings together a diverse range of artistic voices that confront the personal, political, and cultural dimensions of borders and boundaries.
BorderLands attempts to uncover a more layered understanding of borders by following the lead of artists who examine the idea of borders with concern and care. Almost all the works in this exhibition reveal a longing for unity beyond borders and boundaries, inviting us to a redrawing and perhaps a knitting back together of new communal entities. This attitude could be deemed idealistic and utopian, but the artists represented in the exhibition don’t necessarily advocate for the abolition of borders. Instead, they express a desire to reconsider the scale of human values and suggest new perspectives.
Participating artists: Larry Achiampong, Henna Asikainen, Iwan Bala, Maya Rose Edwards, Peter Finnemore, Leo Fitzmaurice, Ghazel, Shilpa Gupta, Mark Houghton, Gabriella Hirst, Verity Howard, Charlie Hurcombe, Hilary Jack, Delaine Le Bas, André Lichtenberg, Daniel MacCarthy, Helene Muheim, Lucy+Jorge Orta, Sally Payen, Corinne Silva and Donovan Wylie.
