Maze de Boer
Amsterdam based Visual Artist and Scenographer.

[De]constructie ([De]construction) (2007) is a large structure made of scaffolding pipes and fabric that evokes the shape of a castle, yet remains unfinished and temporary. The work explores ideas of transformation and imagination: the ordinary meadow becomes a place where something new can emerge, a castle completed only in the mind. In the surrounding area, many castles with formal gardens can be found. Unlike those carefully designed estates, this meadow is turned into a temporary castle garden, a place that wants to be seen and remembered.
The work was part of the exhibition Het weiland dat beroemd wilde worden (The meadow that wanted to become famous (2007), organized by Dertien Hectare, an art foundation from Brabant that presents a biennial exhibition in the countryside of Heeswijk-Dinther. The castle will never be completed, leaving the meadow forever “a meadow that wanted to become famous.” Its unfinished nature invites reflection on ambition, transience, and the ways we shape and imagine our surroundings.

On Monday, May 18, studium resort will be dedicated to the hobby of playing board games. That evening, visual artist and scenographer Maze de Boer will be a guest. During the program 𝘙𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘞𝘦 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵, we explore how play is not only a subject, but also a way of working, thinking, and seeing.
The evening opens with a conversation between host Ellis Kat and De Boer about his practice and about play as a creative driving force. What role do board games play in his way of working? And how does the tension between rules and freedom translate into his artworks?
The second part of the evening consists of a workshop in the form of a collective board game session. Participants are invited to invent, adapt and test rules themselves using different game boards from De Boer’s ‘Play’ series.

The work Depth of Field (2012) consists of two layers: a life-sized black-and-white photograph of a (so it seems) 1930s drugstore, and a physical installation of wooden blocks that build the image. From a distance, it appears to be a historical snapshot, but up close, the partially painted blocks reveal their unpainted sides and the construction behind the photo. Your perspective shapes what you see: from the photograph, everything aligns perfectly; from the installation, the illusion collapses. The work explores how meaning and perception depend on where you stand and how you look.
Depth of Field has been shown at Dertien Hectare (NL) and Galerie Stigter Van Doesburg (NL).

Five large, vintage-style microphones stand proudly, tilted toward the sky. Inspired by the iconic Shure 55 — the quintessential microphone of the 1930s — they form a tribute to music history. Their solid shapes evoke not only memories of legendary stages, but also the distinctive car grilles from the same era.
The artwork stands at the heart of Woonpark Mortiere: a neighborhood with classical architecture that clearly refers to the 1930s. The surroundings are lush with greenery, with a park as its beating heart. The street names honor greats from blues and jazz, and their music seems almost to accompany you as you walk past: the trumpet of Louis Armstrong, the piano of Duke Ellington, the guitar of Robert Johnson, the harmonica of Howlin’ Wolf, and the enchanting voice of Muddy Waters.
