It was exciting to share the Cleveland High School designs with thousands of community members late last month. Alumni, neighbors, and future students were able to see designs of the new school and share their memories about what makes Cleveland unique.
This event was a great cap to 2 1/2 years of engagement with the Cleveland community, including more than 20 planning/design committee meetings, six public workshops, and dozens of focus group meetings with students and staff. Salvage, abatement, and deconstruction will start this summer. Next school year, students will begin learning at Cleveland @ Marshall. Instruction will begin at the modernized Cleveland in fall 2029. A sneak peek of East County Library — @multnomahcountylibrary’s newest flagship location in Gresham, Oregon. Mayer/Reed designed signage standards for the entire library network, creating system-wide cohesion and increasing accessibility and inclusivity through multilingual and icon-based wayfinding. For a special touch at the new flagship, we developed custom concrete letters cast into board form concrete to mark the main entries (a collaboration with @figureplant).
The new East County Library provides an impressive 95,000 square feet of learning, play and connection, including a 200-seat auditorium, maker space, indoor/outdoor children’s play area, teen room, audiovisual studio, sensory rooms and a rooftop terrace with a view. Come celebrate the grand opening of this wonderful new community hub on Saturday, May 16th!

Construction is underway at Salem’s historic Willson Park, marking the final phase of improvements at the Oregon State Capitol! Mayer/Reed’s design for Willson Park improves accessibility, circulation and overall cohesion with the Capitol grounds. The redesign gives new life to the long-defunct Waite Memorial Fountain, transforming it into a central memorial garden, and reconfigures the Walk of Flags to better connect the Capitol with the existing veterans memorials at the park edges. Completion is expected later this year.

Learning never stops. At Mayer/Reed, we nurture our staff’s professional development through mentorship, continuing education and workshops. It’s all part of building a practice where curiosity is supported and growth is intentional.
We also understand the importance of mentoring students and emerging professionals outside the firm, as the path to becoming a landscape architect or experiential graphic designer is not always so obvious. Many on our staff mentor future designers through @acementor and @aforegon, host studio and porfolio critiques for soon-to-be graduates and volunteer their time in schools.

At the Oregon State Capitol in Salem, massive granite boulders emerge from the landscape, artfully carved by master masons and precisely placed to help tell a powerful story of Indigenous voices.
Mayer/Reed’s vision for the new Capitol grounds integrates a series of larger-than-life art boulders that intentionally interrupt the formal design elements of the landscape. Guided by our preliminary sketches, we traveled to the source to hand-select each stone. At the quarry, we used LiDAR technology to create photorealistic 3D scans, which we then incorporated into our working design model.
Boulders have unique “personalities.” The digital scans captured the exact dimensions and character of each boulder and allowed us to accurately communicate these intricacies to our collaborators. Through thoughtful design, technical precision and hands-on collaboration, our vision at the Capitol came to life.

Landscape architecture transforms ideas into places. Through robust community engagement with the neighborhood and collaboration with @portlandparks, Mayer/Reed developed a design that reshaped an underutilized park in Southeast Portland into a cherished community hub. Mill Park opened in 2025.

Spring is in the air! And even with the peak spring break crowds, navigating @pdxairport is a breeze.
The new main terminal at Portland International Airport opened in August 2024, but circulation will continue to shift as construction phases wrap up later this year. Flexible wayfinding signs with changeable fabric message panels allow updates for each new route and phase.
We design beyond opening day, partnering with project teams to think about the passenger experience through multi-year construction phases.

Vibrant renderings of a new North Portland Aquatic Center were recently unveiled to the public. As landscape architect and signage consultant on the project, we are working closely with @portlandparks, @scottedwardsarchitecture and the North Portland community to design a welcoming, inclusive space that reflects the people it serves. Groundbreaking is expected in 2027.

Mayer/Reed is a proud sponsor of the @portlandwinterlightfestival. Every year we are amazed by the talent and passion of the artists and organizers and the ever-growing turnout. Way to glow, Portland!
The final weekend of this year’s PDXWLF is upon us, but you can find our installation, Chasing Rainbows, illuminated for the entire month of February in the lobby of the @sentintelhotel. Visit pdxwlf.org for maps and more information ✨
