Although our oceans remain largely unexplored, our understanding of marine ecosystems is growing steadily thanks to modern technologies. At the same time, this knowledge is becoming increasingly complex and is therefore often only accessible to scientists. But how can we make the digitalised oceans tangible to a wider audience, beyond mere diagrams and tables?
This is the focus of Max Seeger, currently artist-in-residence at the HIFMB. In his multimedia installation, he translates scientific findings into interactive and emotional experiences, thereby opening up new ways of engaging with marine ecosystems.
Max Seeger is a designer and media artist who uses code to create interactive installations, multimedia experiences and generative artworks. As an artistic researcher, he is also pursuing a PhD at the University of Art and Design Linz, investigating how the creative use of digital technologies can influence the relationship between humans and nature.
His work has been recognised with awards including the Lumen Prize and the ADC Talent Award in Gold, and he has exhibited in Linz, Istanbul, Berlin and Seoul.
The installation ‘Interfacing with the Ocean’ can be seen at the Schlaues Haus until 25 May. #artscience #marinebiodiversity

Chom5ky vs. Chomsky is a project that I have been working on for the most part of the last year on behalf of @schnellebuntebilder. So I am very happy that it has just celebrated its North America premiere and is currently exhibited at the NFB space in Montreal for another two weeks.

CHOM5KY vs CHOMSKY: A playful conversation on AI is an engaging and collaborative virtual reality experience that invites us to examine the promises and pitfalls of AI. If machine intelligence is promoted as an inevitable future, we should all be able to ask: What are we hoping to achieve with it? And at what cost?
In short, it is a multi-user VR experience that takes you on a journey in an ever changing and evolving world, in which you can have a conversation with an AI trained on the data traces of renown Professor Noam Chomsky.

My recent work Jewels of the Sea deals with diatoms, little unicellular algae that make up for 25% of the worlds oxygen production. Their frustules are basically made out of glass and there are thousands of differently shaped species out there.
I tried to generatively calculate their forms and structures, displaying the whole variety of their shapes with one algorithm.
Everything is generated and rendered in realtime. Made with #vvvv.
