Balancoire is a piece that responds to the steel doll. Usually facing each other, they are part of a playground of toys that have been cast aside. The swing has burnt steel legs, the underneath of the seat is made of carved wood, a reminder of the scratches and traces found at the playground. Immobilised in a static position, the swing resists its own function; when moved, its legs scrape the floor, marking the present with the violence of friction. Its surface is rusty and invitation becomes refusal. This is metamorphosis as ongoing decay. It is an object caught between what it was made for and what it has become, time layered into material rather than erased by it.
