It’s been a wonderful semester at the GSD teaching an option studio together with Minsuk Cho, Kenzo Tange Design Critic in Architecture and founding principal of Mass Studies in Seoul, South Korea.

The studio focused on complex, layered urban site conditions in Seoul, utilizing the Danginri Power Plant cultural venue by Mass Studies as a “ground challenge”. Eleven students showcased their work on May 1st, 2026, to our esteemed critics and shared their large spectrum of unique intellectual positions.

Thank you to Minsuk Cho (조민석 소장님) for the invitation to be part of this and for your inspiring insights, and to the students for your rigorous and thoughtful work!

Repost @columbiagsapp

Saturday March 14 | 10:30 AM
Anderson C 36 Seongsuil-ro 6-gil, Seongdong-gu, Seoul

For decades, architecture and urbanism have centered the city as an aspirational site for politics, relationships, and construction. Yet it is becoming increasingly evident that other frameworks are emerging, marking a profound change of paradigm. This demands new methodologies, new institutional frameworks, new coalitions, and new forms of practice.

Speakers including Minsuk Cho, Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu, Philippe Rahm, Dean Andrés Jaque, Lydia Kallipoliti, Nahyun Hwang, David Benjamin, Marc Tsurumaki, Rachaporn Choochuey, Mireia Luzárraga, Jong Ho Hong, Weiping Wu, Shirley Surya, and Mark Wasiuta, in a debate moderated by Bart-Jan Polman. The summit will take place this Saturday March 14, and aims to think of architecture and urbanism as exceeding “the city” and as intrinsically transcalar, collective and distributed.

Thank you to all of our friends and colleagues who trekked out to the foothills of Namsan on a chilly Friday night to celebrate the beginning of our 24th year! To those near and far who couldn’t make it but sent wonderful messages: you were there in spirit.

This was an extra special occasion with multiple agendas in celebrating new collaborations, new leadership, a vibrant new energy from the GSD studio, and even a special homecoming for a dear friend!

A special thank you to the brilliant Ahn Eun-Me and Ahn Eun-Me Company and their wonderful collaborators for adorning the Mass Studies rooftop billboard with the reminder to “Breathe Other Colors”—a healthy and sensory reminder for us all. Extra thanks to Ahn Eun-me for the warm video message sent all the way from Oslo, and to the two performers who engaged and connected with everyone throughout the evening!

A warm welcome-back to Korea for Kyong Park—your world-tour of a life and influence are inspiring, and we are so happy to have you close! We were thrilled to be your audience as you reflected on your deep connection to Korea.

And last but not least, a huge thank you to the Mass Family, Mass Chef and Kitchen for their incredible hard work in welcoming, accommodating, and partying with our guests all night for another truly memorable night!

Rhythms of Matter — Fifth Encounter
Minsuk Cho @tullaculture

An evening grounded in reality.

For this fifth encounter, Minsuk Cho (@mass_studies Studies) approached architecture not as form, but as a way of working with ground conditions: political, historical, topographical, social, vertical, and public.

Moving across projects and proposals developed mainly in Korea and Albania, the talk traced how architecture often begins on difficult ground: contested territories, infrastructural leftovers, dense urban edges, and spaces shaped as much by regulation and economy as by people. Rather than ideal sites, Cho focused on what already exists, and what can be reimagined.

From territorial questions to precise urban interventions, architecture emerged as a tool for negotiation: between public space and the market, between infrastructure and daily life, and between collective use and individual experience. Ground was understood not as a given surface, but as something continuously produced, shared, and transformed.

Less about solutions, more about attitude, working with constraints instead of avoiding them.

Thank you, Minsuk Cho, for an open and generous conversation.

Rhythms of Matter - Fifth Encounter
February 3, 2026
7:00 PM
TULLA - Culture Center

Guest: Minsuk Cho
Talk: Ground Challenges

Rhythms of Matter continues with an open talk by architect Minsuk Cho, founder of Mass Studies.

Under the title Ground Challenges, the evening will unfold moving between built work, ongoing questions, and the conditions that shape architectural thinking today.

Cho’s practice engages closely with ground, regulation, public life, and the everyday, working across different geographies and scales, from Korea to Europe, and more recently through projects developed in Albania. His work often begins not with form, but with context: physical, social, and cultural.

At Tulla – Culture Center, Minsuk Cho will share selected projects and reflections that connect architecture to collective experience, process, and time. Images, stories, and references will serve as anchors for a wider dialogue on how architecture is shaped, and reshaped by use, limits, and collaboration.

The talk will be followed by an informal continuation of the evening, accompanied by music drawn from Cho’s personal and collaborative universe.

This event is part of Rhythms of Matter, a series inviting international architects to Tirana not to present conclusions, but to share ways of thinking—openly, carefully, and in conversation with the audience.
