A fortieth birthday with a personal twist. The custom “EspRISSo martini” sign tied her nickname, “Riss” into the theme, pairing red acrylic with a silver cowgirl for a playful nod to the electric cowgirl aesthetic. Matchbooks, napkins, and bar details rounded out the experience while the guests brought the boots.

The cinematic process of getting ready.
I started noodling on this concept a few months ago while observing both the Pinterest boards of some of my brides and the cinematography of films featuring this subject matter. From the iconic makeup montages of early 2000s movies, to the dreamy, watercolor-toned moving art pieces of Sofia Coppola’s films and the like, women have been documented in some process of “in-between” in their bedrooms for decades.
There’s something inherently nostalgic about the entire thing. It brings you back to getting ready for homecoming with your friends, to the days of trying on a hundred different outfits before you picked out the one that worked, to trial and erroring makeup tutorials in front of the bathroom mirror. Within the four walls of our childhood bedrooms, we as girls cultivated who we are as women. There’s a sanctity and an essence of “girlhood” within the process of getting ready, and the act of getting ready the morning of a wedding bridges that past with the present.
Moreover, there’s something so naturally documentary-style about the getting ready process, and I wanted to explore what I could do with it as a photographer. It blends aspects of boudoir and bridals and offers a more candid and personality-forward approach to documenting oneself as the person they are at the age they will become a spouse.
I wanted to take a run at it with myself as a subject and worked with my girl, @brandingbykinseylinnae , to bring this vision to life. We focused on aspects of my personality that would lend themselves well to the subject (my clothing style, my love for cinema, vintage pieces, my favorite color, etc.), and had fun with it. Kinsey totally understood my vision and absolutely killed it, like I knew she would 🤍
My hope is to have the opportunity to implement this approach with my future brides who share a desire to be documented in such a way, and we can work to recreate the way we document the morning of a wedding day to be more intentional and personality-forward.

The night before with Mary & Chris 🤍 I’m still swooning over all of the sweet details that went into this night—their custom ice cream stand, the toile illustrating their memorable locations (their first date spot, their wedding venue, etc.), the party cracker seating chart favors. Everything was so intentional and so so lovely 🥹
