Jíbaro Soy. ✊🏽🤍
One of the most powerful and beautifully detailed sculptures to grace the playa of #BurningMan2023 is “Jíbaro Soy,” a towering 20-foot metal monument created by Puerto Rican artist Mark Rivera @markriverapr also known as “Kidnetick” @kidnetick
This isn’t just a figure; it’s a living story. The “Jíbaro” which is the traditional mountain farmer, the soul and resilience of Puerto Rico, stands guard over the vast desert, machetes crossed. But look closer. His geometric metal body opens at the chest to reveal a vibrant, sprawling, miniature Puerto Rican village, or “favela,” nestled within. 🏡✨
This piece speaks so deeply to heritage, protection, and community. It’s a profound visual statement that we are, literally, what we protect. He carries his people, his home, and his entire culture in his very heart. A guardian of the land and a protector of the people. Seeing the contrast of this intricate, colorful community life within the geometric metal giant across the dust was truly surreal. A testament to resilience and roots. 🇵🇷

Wow, what a year it has been. So much gorgeous art. So many fun stories. Some kinda nasty storms and a wee bit of rain. Well, it wouldn’t be #burningman if that weren’t part of it…
I’ll start my annual recap as always with the man: The original, simple effigy was built by Larry Harvey and Jerry James in 1986, it got bigger and more elaborate over the years and since 200, we elevate the man and set the effigy on a structure. The first one, the Temple of Wisdom, is still one of my favorite man bases.
In 2025, the man base, or actually man pavillon as we call it, was designed by Mark Rivera aka Kidnetick from Santurce, Puerto Rico: The World Fair of Unity, a gathering place where citizens from around the world come together to celebrate creativity, diversity, and shared humanity. I love this gothic revival style from the 1850s world’s fairs, where old designs were reconciled with new technologies, and it fit the theme of #tomorrowtoday so well. Bravo @kidnetick
If you made it inside the pavilion, 16 different art pieces from amazing artists such as @zander_rosefutures (Clarisse McLellan Manual for Civilization), @ultraviolet55 (EmoBot),
@zulu.heru (Whispers of Waste)or @itselinastella (HeliosBloom) were installed all over the structure. Check them out - they’re listed in the art listing on our webpage (link in my profile).
Big h/t to @jeremycrandell and the man krew for all their work and the gorgeous finishes! I loved the little CNC-cut details on the connections!

The World Fair of Unity by Mark Rivera aka Kidnetick from Santurce, Puerto Rico: @burningman ‘s 2025 Man Pavilion. Inspired by the World Fairs of today and tomorrow, this pavilion serves as Black Rock City’s global cultural center. “The World Fair of Unity” is a gathering place where citizens worldwide celebrate creativity, diversity, and shared humanity. This pavilion is a hub of expression, a vibrant space for performances, art exhibitions, and exchanging ideas. Whether you’re here to create, collaborate, or connect, “The World Fair of Unity” invites you to contribute to a collective vision for a more united and inspired future.
This fits so well with the #tomorrowtoday theme. I love this gothic revival style from the 1850s world’s fairs, where old designs were reconciled with new technologies. I can’t wait to see it! And this is really always a bit of a surprise for me since the man and the man pavilion are made and managed by the #dpw and not the art department; h/t to our liaison counterparts in DPW: @jeremycrandell and #HellKat.
With @kidnetick, @kcookcan and her team selected an incredibly accomplished #BurningMan artist who has been the brain and heart behind wonderful creations such as the 20-foot tall sugar cane farmer #JíbaroSoy in 2023 (which is now permanently at the #NeonLineDistrict in #Reno or #Hábitat , a gorgeous 16-foot tall glowing heart. #Kidnetick is also bringing an honoraria art project this year: #UnNuevoCamino - a child and their parent in space suits carrying their hometown in their backpacks while seeking a better future.
I posted the article on the man pavilion selection from the #BurningManJournal in my profile. It’s really worth reading! I’m excited that they also share some other design concepts: I loved @sarriugartejon , @jetgirl2000 and Zolie Sarriugarte’s #bauhaus inspired design (5), Metropolis by @antwane_lee (6), the People Powered Pendulum by @zacharycoffinart (7), or @srcuellar ‘s gorgeous Healing Forest (8). And there are so many more!
All concept renderings by the artists!
