For this special Sunday gig at Tap Social, The Spin will be presenting a top-drawer quartet, fronted by one of the most celebrated saxophonists in the UK – and internationally: Mark Lockheart.

Lockheart was one of the founder members of the ground-breaking big band, Loose Tubes. Since then, he has led a diverse career, performing with such leading luminaries as Norma Winstone, John Pattitucci, Gwilym Simcock, June Tabor, Radiohead, Huw Warren and Thomas Dolby.

Mark's playing spans effortlessly from full-on power to the most beautiful of lyricism; he is one of the few players in the country that has created his own identifiable sound.

Lockheart’s artistry has earned widespread recognition, including Jazz FM Instrumentalist of the Year, Parliamentary Jazz Musician of the Year, and the prestigious Paul Hamlyn Foundation Composer Award. Through his writing, performing, and collaborations, he continues to bridge jazz, classical, and electronic worlds — confirming his place as one of Britain’s most imaginative and influential musical voices.

For this show, Mark will be joined by one of the most brilliant musicians of his generation: Liam Dunachie – the Hammond Organ wizard! Also featured in this band will be the ever-popular and utterly brilliant drummer, Alex Goodyear.

Presented by The Spin’s own Pete Oxley on guitar, this will be an exceptional collaboration that we urge you not to miss!

We are delighted to be joined by two titans of British Jazz for our next Jazz at kollectiv session, taking place in the midst of Music and May.

Steve Lodder is a pianist, synth player, composer, producer, teacher and author. Renowned for his expressive style as a pianist, composer and arranger, Steve has long been an important figure of the British jazz scene. With a creative approach to genre and innovation, his work has taken him from solo albums to incredible collaborations such as ARQ (the Alison Rayner Quintet), and earned him a respected place on the modern jazz landscape. Steve has also collaborated with Paul McCartney, John Harle, Elvis Costello and Brazilian singer Mônica Vasconcelos as well as with our own Carol Grimes. His latest album is '2 Sorts of 3' features Dudley Phillips,Freddie Jensen, on various basses, and Nic France,Marius Rodrigues on drums

Mark Lockheart is one of the most distinctive and creative musicians on the current British music scene. As a saxophonist and composer, his work often defies categorisation and crosses the boundaries of the jazz, new music and folk worlds. 'Lockheart is a consummate saxophonist and a original and versatile composer', The Rough Guide to Jazz tells us.Mark toured extensively with Django Bates' Delightful Precipice, performing at many international festivals including Berlin, Molde and Willisau, and recording with jazz, folk and pop artists June Tabor, Billy Jenkins, Stereolab, Jah Wobble, Robert Wyatt, Prefab Sprout, Don Um Romao ,Thomas Dolby, and more recently Anja Garbarek and Radiohead. Mark's latest album, Shapeshifter, with Huw V Williams, Double Bass, and Jay Davis, was released in March this year.

Shapeshifter performs at The Marr’s Bar Worcester on 14th May can’t wait!!

This week on ‘Round Midnight, @sowetokinch welcomes the singular saxophonist and composer @marklockheart as his 4/4 guest.

As well as his work with foundational groups Loose Tubes and @polarbearmusicclub Mark is a formidable bandleader, including most recently with his new Shapeshifter trio.

From Monday to Thursday, Mark is taking us round his record collection, sharing some of the albums that have influenced his musical journey so far.

We’re delighted to welcome an absolutely stellar lineup to celebrate one of the all-time classic jazz records: the 1963 album ‘John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman’, on which Coltrane teamed up with vocalist Johnny Hartman to explore their favourite romantic standards.

Tenor sax virtuoso Mark Lockheart is joined by vocal sensation Marvin Muoneké, pianist and arranger Alex Webb, and the superb rhythm section of Gary Crosby OBE (bass) and Alfonso Vitale (drums).
