Observing the observers - @distrustful_dinos, alongside @mihaela.ciobota.7 and @andreea_cibi from @ibb_bucharest, during fieldwork in Bucharest's residential gardens for The Urban Green Blueprint project.
It is surprising how many public benches still exist here, and how much they are actually used. While so many cities are going in the opposite direction, making it harder and harder to spend time in public places. These benches remain simple invitations to pause.
That act of stopping opens up the core idea of this project: there are countless species that go unnoticed in our neighborhoods. If we take a moment to observe, we get to meet some really remarkable neighbors, especially if we pay attention to the morning chorus of birds.
But it all depends on how we build our green spaces. Yesterday's encounter with a Common Nightingale is a clear example. While it is a common presence in Bucharest, you only get to observe it in specific residential areas that have kept their bushes and richer vegetation.
Cities remain alive, but they require a certain kind of architecture to stay that way. Sometimes, all it takes to understand a neighborhood is to sit on a bench and listen to who else lives there.

>OPEN CALL< Unplugged? 🔌⛓️💥
No bottomless grid. No next-gen batteries. No infinite growth.
Marginal, @v2_unstable, and @projektatol invites artists, technologists, and designers to work within the premises of permacomputing: Energy is finite. Systems fail. Growth has limits. Now what?
We’re looking for 10 projects engaging with post-energy thinking. Not greener tech myths. Not shinier batteries. But grounded, critical, operational alternatives.
Apply until March 9th → link in bio
Each participant receives a €1500 stipend + additional production budget (discussed individually).
Open to artists and designers working critically at the intersection of art and technology, based in Europe.
The residency will involve a hybrid format → online sessions + on-site co-creation in Bucharest RO.

The Hush Glitches performance was only one part of the story, and we ended it with a deep dive into the "why" behind the "glitch."
🎤 Our after-performance roundtable brought together the artists and scientists behind the project to discuss the data-driven dialogue between humans and plants.
We loved seeing the public step into this live laboratory - not just to listen, but to interact with the installation and experience the sensors firsthand. 👋🧪

🌿 That’s a wrap on Hush Glitches at CNDB! ✨
For two nights, we blurred the line between organism and algorithm, between sensors and sensibility, as we translated Alexandra Necula's physiological input into live reaction of the endemic plants' digital twins, and generative music from Andrei Raicu.
Thank you to everyone who stepped into this live laboratory and helped us expand our proposal for a more-than-human dialogue. The plants certainly had their say.
Stay tuned - we’ll be sharing the full research breakdown soon.

🎙Sensors & Sensibility: Engineering the Invisible Dialogue Between Human and Plant
Here's Mic Matters #005 with interactivity artists Lorena Cocora and Denis Flueraru. We decode the technical nervous system of the project, as they explain how they acted as the binders of Hush Glitches, using custom-built sensors embedded directly into the performers' shoes. This is a conversation about the unseen logic of the performance - how they engineered a system that negotiates between the unpredictable human body, the vegetal logic, and the limits of the machine.
A critical conversation about:
🛠️ The technical architecture: Embedding sensors to capture the performance's invisible pulse.
🔗 Interactivity as translation: Moving beyond simple input/output to unify biology, animation, and choreography.
👟 The handcrafting challenge: The fragility of soldering delicate tech for high-stress live performance.
🌡️ Tech for sensitivity: Can a cold system help us perceive ecological vulnerability?

💡 About Mic Matters: This is where we turn up the volume on overlooked voices and ideas from the margins, as we explore the systems that shape our world - from natural environments and social structures to the ecology of knowledge and technology.
🗣️ Each episode hands the mic to those who think, make and wonder out loud about the status quo, making sense of the world, and the questions that keep them searching. We aren't here for simple answers, but to hear how curiosity sounds in different voices.

🎙️ Evolution vs Responsibility: Biological Ethical Lens on Digital Conservation
We're launching Mic Matters #004 with biologists Luciana Andrei and Codruț Petre as we investigate the scientific foundation of the Hush Glitches project. 🌿🔬
In this episode, we explore the ethical and methodological tightrope walk of translating precise botanical data - from the morphology of endemic plants to their physiological responses - into a language that is both scientifically accurate and artistically compelling. We discuss the crucial shift from viewing data as a sterile necessity to recognizing its creative value.
A critical conversation about:
🧪 Accuracy vs. artistic interpretation: translating scientific requirements into movement and visual art
💻 The digital translation: Modeling the plant’s essence over hyper-fidelity.
💥 Anthropocentric Check: Challenging the view of plants as "silent workers."

🎙️ Accuracy & Aesthetics: Modeling Endemic Plants as Active Digital Twins
In the new Mic Matters episode dedicated to Hush Glitches, Ioana Lariu sits down with 3D artists Alina Rusu and Gabriel Stoiciu to dive into the visual architecture of the digital twin of the endmic plants. 🌿
We discuss the methodological and artistic challenges of transforming complex biological data into a responsive, living digital replica - a visual environment designed to act as an active interlocutor, not a decorative asset. The conversation explores the tension between the controlled environment of 3D modeling and the unscripted reality of live performance.
A critical conversation about:
🔬 Scientific rigor vs. design
🌱 The digital twin protocol
🔨 3D as data interpretation
💥 Designing for unpredictability
