June 4th, 6pm, in-person and online. Use the @anthciis link in bio to sign up! $11 - $32 sliding scale. @ciispubprograms member or happen to be a @ciis_sf prospective student? Get free admission!
A co-production of @blackbuddhiststudies and @ciispubprograms with book partner, @marcus.books
Join author Dr. Rima Vesely-Flad for a conversation exploring a Dharma of liberation, offering timely lessons to help us meet this moment, using the writings of Audre Lorde and James Baldwin to provide real world examples of this dharma in practice.
Dr. Vesely-Flad’s latest book The Fire Inside, examines the writings of Lorde and Baldwin through a Dharmic lens, and discusses how two of America’s greatest literary voices reflect—and expand—Buddhism’s most timeless truths toward justice and liberation. In this conversation with mindfulness teacher Rhonda V. Magee, she will share how the writers’ enduring legacies show that liberation depends not only on organizing and mass movements, but the generative power of inner well-being, authenticity, art, and embodiment. She invites us to examine Baldwin and Lorde through key Buddhist principles such as suffering as teacher, impermanence, karma, anger, and compassion in order to deepen and enhance our own understanding of Buddhism, and liberation.
Through her work and writing, Dr. Vesely-Flad centers and celebrates Black, queer, radical thought and invites us to embrace the ways our inner lives, creative fire, sensuality, and expressions of love can ignite and sustain revolutionary liberation.
1. The new book, The Fire Inside: The Dharma of James Baldwin & Audre Lorde on @natlanticbooks
2. Rima Vesely-Flad, PhD
3. Rhonda V. Magee, M.A., J.D.

@mreddiehuang is a lawyer, comic, chef, clothing designer, restaurateur, and TV host. His memoir “Fresh Off the Boat” became a hit ABC series. Now he’s publishing his debut novel — “Come Undone,” a story of a streetwear unc's search for true love.
Join his conversation with @wkamaubell on June 24.
Nearly 40% of Black women have exited corporate America due to racial and gender discrimination.
Tangentially, Black women remain the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S. I lived these statistics before I ever studied them. Much of my entrepreneurial journey was born of this reality, and my doctorate in Organizational Leadership was a decade-long commitment to understanding the depth of the reality for so many Black women business owners seeking freedom from a system never built to support them.
Thank you to my Sucré clients and customers, my support system, my educators, mentors, and my friends and family for your overwhelming support throughout this journey. — Dr. Kimberly Fomby-Jefferson

JOIN US for Ericka Hart @ihartericka in conversation with Ebony Donnley for Nasty Work, a blend of eye-opening research with powerful, poignant personal narrative that disrupts everything you thought you knew about sex and society, offering a liberatory framework that makes bodily autonomy and pleasure accessible for all!
When you think about sex ed, your mind likely goes back to those uncomfortable school desks and the stifled laughs of your teenage years. But what we’ve been socialized to believe about sexuality actually hinders our own pleasure well into adulthood. Whether we know it or not, even the most progressive among us are often using 400-year-old inherited thoughts and belief systems in the twenty-first century. Why are we still carrying forth these ancient values that have never served the vast majority?
As a Black, queer, non-binary, disabled femme, Ericka Hart believes that sex ed done right can actually be a tool for liberation. In Nasty Work, she breaks down the ways that social implications keep us from experiencing pleasure, particularly for marginalized communities across race, gender, sexuality, and ability, and how we can dismantle these oppressive myths. From examining what guides our attraction to others to the history of consent, Ericka Hart takes the blinders off and reveals a more empowering view of sex and sexuality.

Join us Sunday, April 19th from 1-3PM at Marcus Books for a conversation at the store with renowned Black scholar and Egyptologist, @anthonytbrowder

He is a Howard University graduate and has lectured extensively throughout the U.S. Africa, the Caribbean, Mexico, Japan and Europe. His three decades of study include dozens of study tours and archeological missions, leading him to the conclusion that ancient Africans were the architects of civilization and developed the rudiments of the scientific, religious and philosophical backbone of mankind.
Browder is the founder and director of IKG Cultural Resources and director of the ASA Restoration Project, funding the excavation and restoration of the 25th Dynasty tomb of Karakhamun in Luxor, Egypt. He is the first African American to fund and coordinate an archeological dig in Egypt.
