This month marks the reopening of @hornseytownhall_ to the public in Crouch End, North London.

Make has led the overall architectural and interior refurbishment of this art deco landmark, transforming it into a mixed-use destination that combines cultural, residential, hospitality, co-working and F&B offerings for the local community and visitors.

Working in collaboration with @fecuk_ and @historicengland, Hornsey Town Hall has now been removed from the Heritage At Risk Register, safeguarding its long-term use and securing its future as a community asset for generations to come. Over six years of sensitive restoration, Make has delivered a thoughtful example of adaptive re-use – a careful balance of vibrant, flexible spaces that accommodate diverse community needs while remaining respectful and celebratory of Hornsey Town Hall’s civic legacy.

Introducing Europe’s first curved escalators.

Planning consent has been granted for @harrods’ landmark redevelopment of its Fine Jewellery and Watches departments.

Make is proud to support one of the most ambitious redevelopments in the Knightsbridge store’s history, which will showcase a first-of-its-kind ‘vertical’ two-storey boutique concept for customers.

@katyghahremani, Director at Make and Project Lead, commented: “We are pleased to have worked alongside Harrods, @historicengland, and conservation officers at the @kensingtonandchelseacouncil to celebrate Harrods’ Edwardian heritage while enhancing and upgrading the current fine jewellery and watches department for future use. Make’s reimagined design of the Grade II*-listed building creates an impressive sense of arrival, emulating the original Edwardian sales rooms. We are reintroducing new double-height halls and creating a sequence of spaces that can be read as a series of rooms, while providing Harrods with the individual brand boutiques that form an essential part of modern-day luxury retail.”

@40leadenhall.london picked up Best Commercial Workplace at last night’s @bco_uk Regional London Awards! 🏆

Designed and delivered for client M&G Real Estate with @nuveeninv as development manager, 40 Leadenhall is one of the biggest schemes to ever receive planning permission in the City of London.

Recalling the classic design of early 20th century American skyscrapers, the striking 34-storey tower responds to its surrounding context and integrates with the Grade II-listed 19–21 Billiter Street. A wide variety of floorplates cater to different office tenants, and a powerful double-height entrance lobby creates an impressive welcoming arrival experience. The design combines extensive amenity and social spaces for building users and the public, heritage assets, and a rational approach to produce a timeless and elegant addition to the City.

Partner Cara Bamford said: “We are delighted that 40 Leadenhall has been recognised by the BCO judges as we believe it sets a new benchmark for workspaces of the future. We’d like to thank the whole team with special mentions for M&G, Nuveen and Mace.”

We’re heading to Scotland this June for the @bco_uk Conference!

Our five-strong delegation will be attending events across Edinburgh and Glasgow for the Festival of Enlightenment programme: Dr Ken Shuttleworth, Kathryn Edwards, Oliver Hall, Cara Bamford and Liam Bonnar.

Ken, a BCO Past President, will be speaking on the ‘Navigating office development in UK regional cities’ plenary on 17 June.

First though, we’ll be hoping for sunshine for Oliver — @bco_nextgen National Chair — and Liam as they embark on the Annual Cycle Challenge, pedalling 300km from Aviemore to the Edinburgh conference venue.

Help them raise funds for conference charity @spifox_too via the link in our bio!

If you’d like to meet with our Makers during the conference, get in touch at press@makearchitects.com.

🌿 This Earth Day, we’re proud to support the Viritopia-led open letter calling for living walls to be formally recognised as green infrastructure in UK national planning policy.

Living walls are so much more than a design feature. They’re functional climate infrastructure, delivering the environmental and resilience outcomes our cities urgently need.

Signed by Make’s Stuart Fraser, we’ve joined a coalition of architects, green infrastructure providers, academics and landscape professionals to call for this recognition at a pivotal moment for our industry and the future of our cities.

Read the letter to the Minister for Housing and Planning at: www.viritopia.com/blog/dear-minister-for-housing-and-planning

📷 Eden, Salford @paulkaralius
Our 12-storey office project for the English Cities Fund with a 3,300m2 living wall designed in collaboration with @viritopia_ltd. The UK’s first 5.5-star NABERS UK Design Reviewed project, alongside BREEAM Outstanding and EPC A ratings.

Make has completed a full facade refurbishment and 2-storey rooftop extension for @hysan100 at the iconic Lee Garden One shopping centre in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay.

Make’s facade concept emphasises materiality and texture, with a neutral palette that complements individual luxury and lifestyle brand facades. Locally sourced and crafted stone cladding, copper-coloured highlights, and decorative mesh ‘lattice veils’ add visual accents across the facade. The design language of the stone cladding has been continued through to the entrance column, with its unique diamond-shaped motif carved onto Gascogne Beige limestone. This feature acts as a major anchor to the Lee Garden One entrance, welcoming visitors into the mall.

Its ongoing refurbishment over the years forms a key part of wider regeneration plans for the @leegardenshk precinct.

🎥 Hear from the #WorshipSquare project team on how we’ve collectively delivered a London workspace built for the future.

Along with Make project architect, Chris Jones, we teamed up with @hbreavis_uk’s Ryan Jakes and Abhishek Parmar as well as @heynetillettsteel’s James Morgan to illustrate how this 9-storey new-build positions itself as a leading City and Shoreditch development.

Delivered as a fully net-zero development in both operation and construction, the scheme offers more than 120,000ft² of flexible commercial office space, including 15,000ft² of on-demand affordable workspace, along with valuable wellbeing-focused amenities. The new block, expressed through a vibrant blue facade, features strong vertical piers and textured spandrels, and is clad in extruded terracotta – a reference to the warehouse architecture synonymous with the local area.

Worship Square is a finalist in the Best Commercial Workplace category at the @bco_uk Regional Awards (London). The winners will be announced in April.

This week’s #MakeModelMonday showcases a shortlisted proposal for a college library at @oxford_uni, envisioning a new social heart for a 300-year-old campus. Inspired by the college’s picturesque setting, which includes an historic orchard with gardens leading to a lake, we conceived a 2-storey rectilinear form with a gridded tree canopy-style roof that bathes the building in natural light.

Bold structural columns create a series of dynamic, efficient spaces across the floor plan, including alcoves for solo and collaborative study. Reading nooks and book collections are arranged around these ‘tree trunks’, positioned to offer resplendent views into the surrounding greenery, while two columns extend upwards create a circular reading room overlooking the copper-clad roofscape. A covered first-floor terrace provides additional space for learning and socialising.

Scale 1:25
Dimensions: 500mm x 500mm x 400mm
Time to make: 4 weeks
Materials used: maple veneer, cherry veneer, solid cherry, copper, jesmonite, SLS resin print
Modelmakers: Paul Miles, Alex Stewart, George Taylor
Project team: Jason Parker, Liam Bonnar, Emma Thomas, Katharine Hubbard
