Tiny summer encounters, hidden just above the grass ☀️🐝

10 of my favorite insect captures I have taken during summer. When the meadows are full of flowers, bees are buzzing everywhere, butterflies rest in the grass, and damselflies catch the sunlight, every photo walk feels like there is something new waiting to be discovered 😍

Summer is one of the most exciting seasons for insect photography. Nature feels fully awake, and the smallest subjects can appear anywhere, from a bee sleeping in a flower to a tiny jumping spider staring back at the camera. Some moments are planned, but many of the best ones happen when you slow down and start noticing the tiny life around you 🔍

𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗽:
For insects, you do not always need to get as close as possible. Step back a little and crop later if needed ✨
This helps you keep enough distance so you do not scare the insect away, and it can also give you a slightly deeper depth of field, so more of the subject stays sharp without raising your ISO or sacrificing the shutter speed 💡

If you love macro photography, insect photography, bees, butterflies, or are looking for summer photography inspiration, save this for your next photo walk 🌿

And if you would like to learn more about how I photograph and edit my macro images, I share photography tips, editing tutorials, behind-the-scenes posts, and RAW-to-final examples on my Patreon.

Which insect would you be most excited to photograph this summer? 🐞

Happy World Bee Day 🐝💜

These dreamy little bee moments were captured between the tiny erica flowers during the middle of the day, with the Sun high above and the light extremely harsh. Midday lighting can be one of the trickiest conditions for nature photography because of the strong shadows and blown out highlights, and honestly, many of the photos from this session did not work out at all 🫠

💡 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝘂𝗻 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀:
Here are a few simple tricks that help deal with harsh conditions like these.
1. Stand with the Sun behind your back and cast a shadow onto the flowers. This softens the harsh contrast and gives the scene much more even light
2. Photograph in RAW when shooting in difficult lighting conditions like this. RAW files keep far more detail in both the shadows and highlights, which makes editing much more flexible later on, especially when trying to recover bright areas or soften contrast.

It is always satisfying when a challenging lighting situation turns into photos you end up loving 🥹💜

A little sleeping bumblebee from last summer 💜

I found this scene near the end of an evening photo walk, when I stopped by a corner filled with these beautiful purple flowers. As I looked closer, I realized there were bumblebees sleeping inside them - and it was honestly one of the most wholesome little scenes I had ever seen 🥹

There is something so adorable about finding bumblebees resting like this, tucked between the tiny flowers after a busy day. It felt like I had discovered a tiny hidden bedtime routine in the garden 💤

This photo was not captured with my macro lens. I used my Sony 135mm f/1.8 lens, which I got last year and have been loving so much. It is amazing for dreamy, isolated flowers, but it can also work beautifully for close-ups of insects like these.

Soft purple flowers, evening light, and a sleepy bumblebee - such a sweet summer memory 💜

Little visitor between the Sakuras 🌸🐝

This is the same bee from my windy sakura photoshoot. It surprised me by appearing between the blossoms, and later it even crawled onto my hand to warm up between the strong wind gusts 🥹

It stayed with me long enough to capture multiple photos - both on the cherry blossoms and on my hand, including this close-up focus stack. Yes, the pink background you see here is from the sakura blossoms, and yes, the bee really is sitting on my hand 🫶🏻

The first photo is a single shot, while the second one is a 10-photo focus stack to capture more detail in the head and eyes. I love how much texture you can see in its tiny face, from the pollen grains to all those little hairs 😍

This is a mining bee, a type of solitary bee that usually nests by digging tunnels in the ground. Many of them are beautifully fluffy, and those hairs on the legs help them collect and carry pollen as they visit flowers.

💡 I shared an in-depth behind-the-scenes post from this windy photography session on Patreon, including videos, photos, and my techniques for handheld insect photography in strong wind. Visit my Patreon if you want to read the full breakdown 🤍

A lavender dream 🐝💜

This honeybee was photographed during the same lavender garden visit as my butterfly photos. The whole garden was alive with movement that day - bees buzzing from bloom to bloom, butterflies drifting through the flowers, and lavender filling every corner with soft purple color 😍

I loved how this little bee paused just long enough for me to capture it among the tiny lavender flowers. Moments like this are why I enjoy photographing insects so much. They bring so much life into a scene, even when they only stay for a few seconds.

Swipe for a behind the scenes video. Do you see how many bees are flying around? 💜

Looking back at these summer photos always makes me excited for more warm days, blooming gardens, and tiny visitors hidden between the flowers 🐝

A highlight from my recent photo walk 🦋🌸

I was already heading home after photographing spring in the city when I spotted a gorgeous plum tree by the side of the road. I stopped to capture the blooming branches, turned slightly to the right... and there it was - this beautiful butterfly sleeping between the blossoms 🥹

The Sun had already set, so I had to act quickly with the little light I had left. The butterfly stayed perfectly calm and did not mind me at all, but the wind was a different story. It kept blowing the branches in every direction, making it much harder to capture clear shots 🫠

I waited between the wind gusts and photographed during those tiny calmer moments. It reminded me a lot of the bee in blossoms photoshoot, where I shared a deeper behind-the-scenes look and my tricks for photographing in windy conditions on Patreon 🐝

The little moments like this remind me why I love nature photography so much 🥹🩷

This photo is a 3-image focus stack. Since the light was limited, I photographed at f/2.8, but that also meant the depth of field was very shallow. Taking multiple shots helped me keep the whole butterfly sharp while still keeping the soft, dreamy background.

💡 I have also shared an easy focus bracketing technique on Patreon for creating stacks like this, even without relying on your camera's built-in focus bracketing feature.

⚙️ Photo settings: Sony a7 IV + FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS | 1/250s, f/2.8, ISO 800, 3 photo focus stack | 02.05.2026.

Hidden details inside a crocus 💜🧡

The details of crocus pollen are always so fascinating to see up close. From the outside, we usually notice the beautiful purple petals first, but once you look deeper into the flower, there is a whole tiny world waiting inside.

Through a macro lens, the center of a crocus becomes full of texture, shapes, and glowing yellow pollen grains. I love how these tiny details almost look like another landscape hidden inside the flower ✨

This is one of the reasons I enjoy macro photography so much. It lets me slow down and notice the details that are so easy to miss with the naked eye.

Swipe to see the pollen even closer!

Dreamy pink Bird-in-a-Bush flowers, isolated against a field of others. The pink beauties of Spring 🩷 Swipe for a close up!

The "Bird-in-a-Bush" flower is named for its unique, spurred blossoms that resemble tiny, purple-pink birds perched or "nestling" within the plant's surrounding fern-like foliage ✨

I always find these flowers challenging to photograph. So much so that I believe this is the first time I'm sharing this flower in my feed.

I have plenty of flowers I struggle to photograph, and often end up ditching the photos, including lilies, rhododendrons, and daffodils. 🫠 This is due to their complex shape and the challenge of photographing all the key areas sharply while still isolating them beautifully.

Are there flowers you struggle with photographing, too?
