The Kootenay cabin is situated in a wooded, sloped site, overlooking the Dogtooth Mountain Range across the Columbia River. The ’entry’ starts as you slowly drive up to the property, where the house partially reveals and conceals itself through the woods. Upon arrival, a galvanized steel bridge leads you toward the covered entry, or the building’s ’underbelly,’ where you are welcomed by native plantings along the path, enhancing the sense of arrival.


The home is an example of a typology that we call ’xyz house’ that recurs in our body of work. The bottom bar (sleep) cradles the top mass (live). The hearth serves as a continuous totem, both ’marking’ and ’grounding’ the space, above and below. On the main level, across from the hearth, is a terrace. The operable glazing in the living room seamlessly connects the indoor space with the terrace, transforming them into one cohesive ’room.’

This neighbourhood is located on a mountain in Utah's Wasatch Range. Given the typically more than 500 inches of snowfall per year, and in order to touch the land lightly, the buildings are supported on steel stilts and accessed by steel exterior bridges.

Prospect, a 2018 Dalhousie Free Lab project, is an exercise in design and build. Together with the architects, the students studied various configurations for the cladding and developed a design for prefabricated wood cladding panels that emulate the mottling of the existing birch trees on the site. Cedar boards stand on edge in a seemingly random, but very intentional pattern to achieve this.

“The Shobac” refers to the adjacent high cliffs (called a ‘conspicuous bank’ by mariners) at the LaHave River estuary on Nova Scotia’s Atlantic coast. A seasonal settlement for millennia for Indigenous Mi'kmaq, a place for early French fishermen to dry their catch, an Acadian settlement in the early 1600s, and a foreign protestant settlement in the 1750’s; this land has had a long, fitful history of settlement, with farmlands giving way to forests and back again. All builders believed that they were building for so called ‘permanence’. This landscape was re-cleared again from forest over the past 35 years, revealing its historic ruins and its 400 years of agrarian history.

Shobac is an expression of utopian architectural ambitions, an argument for landscape stewardship through agricultural/architectural cultivation. The evolving campus design is the result of many years of design exploration through the work of the Ghost Lab and the work of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects.
