That comparison says it better than any words. Lighting is everything when shooting video. That’s the difference between your diy content and professional video. It’s not the camera. iPhone cameras are actually confusingly great cameras for something we carry around in our pockets every day, risking scratching them up with our keys.

But no camera will do everything for you. You still need to treat the rest of the shoot with a bit of knowledge, planning, and intentionality. Think about your ambient lighting, put some lights up, move them around and try different spots. You don’t need to spend anything though! Honestly grabbing whatever lamps you can find around the house and placing them with some thought will be the biggest upgrade your video footage will ever get.

If you’re an artist needing to promote your music, you obviously know “no budget” can’t mean no content. It’s a non-negotiable these days. But no budget also doesn’t mean no production value or cheap-looking content either. Save this to come back to next time you have a single to promote and need to film something! This stuff was honestly so simple to learn by just experimenting and all it takes is a bit of time and effort to instantly look better than most of the content on Instagram.

Reviving old song ideas every Thursday and this one is the epitome of the series. A full song I wrote last year that’s stuck on a hard drive because I don’t have a solo artist project and it’s likely too personal to give away. I could possibly be convinced to finish the production and release it 🤔 if you share this and enough people hear it I think I’ll have no choice 👀

Reviving old song ideas every Thursday 🎵 This was another experiment with @opensoulaudio Cosmic Vintage Drums working on programming them to feel as human as possible. The trick for ghost notes on the snare is to cut up a snare roll sample. It’ll give you all sorts of different velocities and tones of little light hits, rolls, and snare buzz.
