“Please, don’t, shoot (The American way)”

2016
In 2016, Michael Krouse invited me to participate in the show “American Landscape”. Michael wanted me to create an installation that would exist in a window of the space.
On August 18th, 2016, state trooper, Jermaine Saunders, attempted to pull over Daniel Kevin Harris for a speeding violation on interstate 485. Daniel Kevin Harris was deaf. He had trouble communicating with the officer, then was shot and died on the scene.

3 channel video loop
2016
The piece “Please, don’t, shoot (The American way)” was inspired by a tragic event that took place a few months prior. The video is a 3 channel loop with each loop running for about 01:17”. Each channel loops a different sign, forming the sentence “Please, don’t, shoot”.
The subtitle (The American way), points to the American ideology of “shoot first, ask questions later” which means “to take hasty, immediate action with serious consequences, without first adequately investigating the situation.” It also points towards the idiocy of self-defense with a concealed weapon and the notion that guns solve conflicts or keep people safe.

“My False Sense of Security”(installation view)
24 x 62 x 72”
Cinder block, mortar, giclee print on fleece
2016
“My False Sense of Security” plays on the ideas of security and how feeling “safe” is usually amplified by objects that only provide a certain level of safety and are used for political gain. These items could be items such as cameras, walls, and blankets. Or could also be branches of law and military. I believe that the idea that we are safe is an illusion. Building a wall to prevent crime is as much of an illusion as myself creating a piece as a response to ignorance.

“My False Sense of Security (installation view + performance stills)
00:15:00’
2016
About an hour after the opening, the performance “My False Sense of Security” took place. For 20 minutes, Javier Vargas who is of Mexican descent started to lay the cinder blocks and mortar, slowly raising the level of the blocks. The final product was an erected wall that covered the fleece blanket right below the 45th president’s toupee. The height was intentional so that you wouldn’t have to look at the smug grin anymore but left enough detail so that it was recognizable. Throughout the night, people posed near or sat on top of the cinder blocks around the piece, drinking, and smoking as you would celebrating the fall of any tyrant figure.

“My false sense of security:
Delt with (Installation view)”
50x60”
Glicee print on fleece
2016
In 2016 I was asked by Andres Guererro to be a part of the group show “Welcome to the left coast”. This show was a response to the 45th POTUS inauguration and his ignorant remarks on social issues. The show took place at the Luggage Store gallery with over 50 very talented Bay Area artists.
The piece “My False Sense of Security” was compromised of two works that were tied together through a performance. It was a direct response to the 45th POTUS’s attack on immigration and his promise to build a wall on the Mexican/American border. The initial part of the piece was displayed during the first hour of the show. “Delt with” consisted of a fleece blanket that contained the image of the 45th president. This image was taken from the cover of Time magazine’s August 31st, 2015’s issue, photographed by Martin Schoeller. I chose to utilize the fleece as my canvas because of the irony the item held. Blankets provide comfort and warmth, while the image printed on the blanket did not. The original text from the magazine cover was altered from saying “Deal with it” to “Dealt with”. This was a precursor to the performance that was lined up to happen later in the evening.

“An opening that can be
closed with a lack of deep admiration”
Painting, performance, installation.
48x252x84”
Performance 00:02:00”
Ink, spray paint on drywall, galvanized fence/ steel
2015
In this piece, I was again exploring the fence as an object of obstruction. Something that limits your path as a voyager, but also as an object that can allow passage, through a portal. In this sculpture, the portal was created by an anonymous person who left two markings one in permanent ink and the other in spray enamel. The first marking on the left “Formation II” is a monogram of the word “RUNA”, RUNA is a Quechua word that means “person, or being”. I was creating monograms in my earlier installation works with the intent of them being sigils. The monograms abstract the word to guise their meaning and give the word power by becoming a symbol. The second marking “Formation I” is just a line, a sliver, or cut-like marking; another portal beyond the first.
The performance aspect of the piece took place during the opening of the MFA show, it consisted of two people that would walk into the space covered from head to toe in white protective clothing, to make them as ambiguous and removed of their humanity as possible. They would then walk through the opening in the fence and proceed to try and remove the markings with cleaning supplies for about 40 seconds, then they would leave the same way they came in. What was left were the remnants of their actions, creating something new and abstracted by destroying what was already there. Similar to the alterations of the fence, the final product is a combination of death and rebirth.
