Join us for a day on the land! ☀️🌼
On the day of the Summer Solstice, the SIT-PLU Lab invites you to an open garden day in the dye garden at Ter Beken. From 10:00 to 12:00, we will work collectively in the garden.
Like last year, when the sun reaches its highest point, you are invited to harvest St. John’s Wort flowers with us and make a healing oil. Around this time, St. John’s Wort produces a red pigment as a protective mechanism. Alongside St. John’s Wort, we will look together at a variety of plants that produce red colour pigments as survival strategies.
How can we collectively learn from and be with these plants in times of heat?
At 13:00, we will gather for a shared potluck lunch. Please bring enough food for 1–2 people—our table is a collective one, where everyone gets a taste of everything.
🫙Please bring a clean glass jar with a tight-fitting lid (like a jam jar)—we’ll provide the oil base.
📆 Sunday, June 21st

We have the pleasure to receive the wonderful killjoy @avery.sofie at LUCA Ghent next Thursday.
The lecture by Sofie Avery 'On Transgression: boundaries, consent, and the limits of the pedagogical relationship' is part of the lecture series 'Teaching to Transgress - education as the practice of freedom' after the eponymous book of bell hooks.
bell hooks writes about transgression in the positive sense: an engaged teacher can help students to transcend, to surpass themselves and the limits of their comfort zone. That makes teaching an exercise in negotiating, and moving, boundaries. However, transgression also knows a negative meaning: violation, or the crossing of boundaries in a way that is harmful. Where are the limits of the pedagogical relationship? Drawing on the work of feminist philosopher Amia Srinivasan and their own research on sexually transgressive behavior in higher education, Sofie Avery will offer us tools to reflect on this complex question.
Sofie recentlt obtained a PhD in philosophy from the universities of Ghent and Antwerp. Their doctoral research explores how universities can provide a just response to sexual misconduct from various perspectives, including intersectionality, institutional responsibility, (narrative) healing and knowledge justice.
The lecture series is aimed at the LUCA community to spark pedagogical conversations, but is open to anyone.
The series is organized through the expertise team Art, Society and Education by Sarah Késenne, Maureen Magerman (@kunstenkabinet.maureenmagerman), Anja Veirman (@anja.veirman) and Margo Veeckman (@marggvckmn)

Dear Friends,
I warmly invite you to my PhD pivot performance, Paningkamot Pagpadayon ang Paglupad (PPaP) / An Attempt to Not Lose Flight: Segment 2. 🪶 The piece follows Segment 1 where we travelled four Belgian cities to collect the public’s thoughts.
PPaP: Segment 2 is a stand-alone work and an open-to-the-public durational piece where people can walk in and out from. It is anchored to my ongoing Doctoral candidacy in the Arts at KU Leuven and LUCA School of Arts. In my research, I look into notions of migrant precarity, integration rhetorics, performativity, and lived experience.
When: May 13 2026 from 14:30 till 18:30
Where: BROEI, Nieuwland 69, 9000 Gent
It would be great to have you and share the performance experience with you. Bring friends, loved ones, and bodies whom the work might resonate with. Warm welcome! 🌿
This project is supported by the Roger Dillemans Fund and KU Leuven’s Science Communication Fund.
*For updates, please check out BROIE’s website: https://www.broei.be/agenda/2026/04/23
**Bar BROEI might be open on the performance day and offer drinks.

🔜 | This page is dedicated to a collaboration and upcoming exhibition between the Royal Museums of Art and History (RMAH), Ghent University and the LUCA School of Arts in Brussels. The project was led by Prof. Marie Auger and Prof. Liesbeth Decan.
During the first semester, students from Ghent University began researching the work of Adrien van der Burch (1877–1954). Van der Burch was a Belgian aristocrat, amateur photographer, and heritage enthusiast who restored the Château d’Écaussinnes-Lalaing and later helped transform it into a public cultural site. Through his travel photography, he documented aristocratic life, blending formal tradition with moments of intimacy. His work leaves a legacy that bridges private memory and public heritage. This seminar focuses on his collection of glass plate photographs, analyzing both the images themselves and the photographic techniques behind them.
Building on this research, photography students from the LUCA School of Arts in Brussels developed their own projects inspired by van der Burch’s work. Rather than merely referencing historical material, they critically engage with its themes, questioning notions of authorship, modes of representation, and the construction of heritage. From this group, four students were selected to further develop their projects. This ultimately led to the exhibition, where archival research from Ghent University enters into dialogue with the artistic practices of LUCA students.
