Today, we spotlight the 39th Annual Loisaida Festival, presented by the nonprofit Loisaida Center. Inspired by the late legendary Nuyorican poet Jesús “Tato” Laviera’s concept of AmeRícan—the Puerto Rican way of being American—the festival celebrates the vibrant cultural legacy of Loisaida and the Lower East Side.

While Tato’s voice is no longer with us, his spirit continues to resonate through the artists, organizers, and community members who keep this culture alive. At a time when displacement and cultural erasure continue to reshape the neighborhood, the festival stands as a powerful affirmation of identity, creativity, and collective memory.

Joining us for this conversation are Alejandro Epifanio Torres, Executive Director of Loisaida Center (@loisaidainc.center), and David “Daso” Soto, a performer from this year’s festival and long time organizer on the LES. Together, they discuss the importance of preserving Nuyorican culture, the role of community arts in New York City, and how the festival continues to honor the legacy of Tato Laviera while inspiring new generations.

Un Vistazo 🎬 a nuestra Expo en @piraguaartspace para el Loisaida Fest 2026. Experiencia inmersiva que presenta el nuevo proyecto “Nuestros Héroes” 🙌 un comic book 📚 tributo a la comunidad revolcionaria de Loisaida en los 1970’s. 🧱🇵🇷

La instalación presenta una colección de máscaras creadas por Bebe Bambu y La Ganga 🎭 grupo de exalumnos de su Mask Making Workshop en Lower East Side, junto con una exposición fotográfica y una documentación detallada del proceso artístico realizada por @diana_nugu_ 📸 💫.

Durante el Loisaida Fest tuvimos nuestra gran apertura en la galería y Claro que nos montamos en los escenarios a cantar nuestras canciones!! 🎙️🔥

​This past Sunday at the Loisaida Festival, the weather definitely tested us—but it only proved our resiliency. Just like we have shown time and time again in the past, a little rain (or even a lot of it) can't dampen our spirit, our culture, or our movement.
