The Music of Kelan Phil Cohran: Listening Position Interview
Although his name may not be as recognizable as his music peers, Kelan Phil Cohran (May 8, 1927 – June 28, 2017) left an incredible legacy, especially in his adopted hometown Chicago. He played and recorded with the Sun Ra Arkestra and was a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). For a three-hour episode @wfmu devoted to Cohran’s music, OoD host David Mittleman interviewed Jake Viator, whose Listening Position Records recently reissued Cohran’s album, “African Skies.”
Includes a rare, live (1991), unreleased version of Kelan Phil Cohran’s signature song “White Nile.”

This is one of the most exciting releases of the year for me.
African Skies is a powerful, spiritual, and deeply imaginative record , the kind of album that feels both rooted in tradition and completely cosmic at the same time. Kelan Phil Cohran & Legacy create a sound world that blends African rhythms, celestial melodies, and an uplifting communal energy that still feels ahead of its time.
That’s why this new reissue from Listening Position feels so special. Sourced from the original studio master DAT and transferred perfectly, this edition finally gives the album the clarity it deserves. The distracting noise that originally appeared in White Nile has been fully removed, letting the track breathe and unfold exactly as it should.
The packaging is just as thoughtful,a stunning new inner-gatefold featuring a telescopic image of Supernova 1987a, connecting perfectly with Cohran’s cosmic sensibilities.
A truly exceptional reissue of a timeless, visionary album.

𝘓𝘐𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘕𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘗𝘖𝘚𝘐𝘛𝘐𝘖𝘕: In 1993, when Chicago’s Adler Planetarium asked Kelan Phil Cohran to score a program called African Skies, they tapped a mind that moved comfortably between galaxies and neighborhoods, between ancestral rhythm and modern invention. Cohran had once sat inside Sun Ra’s Arkestra, studying the cosmos through a brass bell. By the time the Adler commissioned him, he had become a guiding presence on the South Side, shaping young musicians, building instruments, and teaching that the universe sings if you listen closely enough. “Music is the language of life,” he once said. “It is how everything communicates.”
African Skies will soon descend back into the world. Stones Throw has launched a new imprint called @listeningposition with a reissue sourced from the original DAT and mastered for clarity, presence, and vibration. @jakeviator.wav, who runs the imprint, lost thousands of records in the Eaton Fire, including original Cohran LPs. That loss pushed him toward preservation rather than possession. He talks about liberating music from basements and storage closets and making it available in the highest available fidelity. “I didn’t understand Coltrane until I heard him on a system larger than me, in Mono,” he says in release notes. “I want to remove the obstacles between people and their sound systems by producing the best-sounding records possible.”
