The Independent Truck Company cross logo, originally designed by Jim Phillips in 1978, is one of the most recognizable symbols in skateboarding history.Phillips based the original vision on the "surfer's cross," a variant of the Iron Cross that was popular in 1960s California surf and biker culture. The logo was initially rejected by company founders because it looked "too Nazi". Phillips convinced them to use it after finding a photo of Pope John Paul II wearing a similar rounded cross on his robes. The logic was: "If the Pope can wear it, so can we". Unlike the traditional German Iron Cross, which has straight sides, the Independent version features rounded, flared edges. As of late 2025 and early 2026, there has been significant speculation and excitement regarding a potential return of the classic cross logo.
Skateboarding legends like Peter Hewitt have recently shared photos of the classic cross on new merchandise, stickers, and pins, suggesting the brand may be reintroducing it to celebrate its heritage. #independenttrucks #lisbonshredders #lisbonshreddersskateculture
