A year ago today we brought home this scrappy little mutt— not without a lot of deliberation and prior to that, telling Dan I would “only look” at a holiday adoption event.
She came into my life as my friend Miguel and my grandmother’s health were both declining. I spent much of January in and out of depressive spells. I’m not sure raising a puppy made any of that easier but we named her Lucha (“fight”) and that became my personal reminder to keep going when my loved ones could not.
Ironically, Lucha can be easily frightened, refusing to move forward if something doesn’t seem right to her. I quickly discovered that the way I spoke to her in those moments was the way I spoke to myself. And so, this has been a year of learning what it sounds like to speak gently and express compassion— to her but also myself. Gracias, Luchita 🤍
