Wir vom MAK freuen uns über die Wiederbestellung unserer Generaldirektorin Lilli Hollein für die nächsten fünf Jahre und gratulieren herzlich! 🫶🥰
Lilli Hollein zur Verlängerung: „Ich danke dem Bundesminister und Vizekanzler Andreas Babler sowie der von ihm eingesetzten Findungskommission für das Vertrauen, das in dieser Vertragsverlängerung Ausdruck findet. Sie ist eine Anerkennung der intensiven Arbeit des gesamten MAK Teams, dieses bedeutende Haus in den vergangenen Jahren noch präsenter zu machen. Die Verlängerung kommt in einer Phase deutlich steigenden Publikumszuspruchs und internationaler Aufmerksamkeit, und es ist mir – gemeinsam mit meinem Kollegen Gregor Murth – ein Anliegen, den vor uns liegenden herausfordernden Zeiten mit klaren Konzepten und einem motivierten Team zu begegnen. Persönlich empfinde ich die neuerliche Berufung als Auszeichnung, und ich freue mich sehr auf die Arbeit der kommenden Jahre, mit dem Team des MAK, das mir ebenso am Herzen liegt wie die Begeisterung unserer Besucher*innen.“

We at the MAK are delighted to announce the reappointment of our General Director Lilli Hollein for the next five years and warmly congratulate her! 🫶🥰
Lilli Hollein on the extension of her term: “I would like to thank Federal Minister and Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler as well as the selection committee he appointed for their trust, as expressed in this contract extension. It is a recognition of the dedicated work of the entire MAK team in further strengthening the presence of this important institution in recent years. This extension comes at a time of significantly increasing visitor numbers and growing international attention. Together with my colleague Gregor Murth, I am committed to meeting the challenges ahead with clear strategies and a highly motivated team. On a personal level, I consider this renewed appointment a great honour, and I very much look forward to the years ahead, working with the MAK team, which is as important to me as the enthusiasm of our visitors.”

Lili Waerndorfer (née Hellmann) donated Carl Otto Czeschka’s costume designs for Richard Wagner’s operas Tristan und Isolde and Die Walküre to the MAK as permanent loans in 1934, after the museum had declined to purchase them. In April 1938, Lili Waerndorfer fled the Nazi regime, under which many members of her family were murdered. She died in the United States in 1952.
In 2022, @kathrinpokornynagel drew the attention of Director General @lilli.hollein to the loan, which had not been addressed since then. With the valuable support of experts from the Commission for Provenance Research at the @kunstkulturministerium, extensive research made it possible to identify the rightful heirs of the works and to submit an offer to purchase them.
Tristan and Wotan are among the highlights of the newly reopened permanent collection VIENNA 1900 – Everyday Life. A Total Work of Art.
It was a great pleasure to welcome Samuel Jones, Jeffrey Warndof, and Donna Warndof, descendants of Lili Waerndorfer, together with Pia Schölnberger @piambina, Head of the Austrian Commission for Provenance Research (@kunstkulturministerium) to the opening of VIENNA 1900 at the MAK last week.
We are delighted that these costume designs could now be acquired for the MAK with the generous support of the Asenbaum family @artconsultasenbaum, Caroline Mortimer @cvm1960, and an anonymous donor—and that they are now part of the MAK collection. ❤

A little throwback to the inaugural Münze Österreich Prize at viennacontemporary 2025, awarded to Ukrainian artist Kateryna Lysovenko (@lysovenko_kateryna ) and @tba_gallery, a pioneering art award by @mak_vienna , @muenzeoesterreich and @viennacontemporary.
The prize includes a solo exhibition at the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, coinciding with viennacontemporary 2026, opening 16 September and running through 18 October 2026.
This year’s selection was made by a distinguished jury: @lillihollein, Helmut Andexlinger, @adam.h.budak , @yilmaz.dziewior , and @filipaoliveira_curator.
