Planet City is a film and book set in an imaginary city for 10 billion people, the entire population of the earth, where we surrender the rest of the world to a global scaled wilderness and the return of stolen lands. The film follows a continuous festival procession dancing through the city on a 365 day loop. Each day it intersects with a different carnival, culture and celebration, changing the beat as it goes, endlessly cycling through new colors, costumes and cacophonies.

As visual consultant for the @appletv film Swan Song we explored how augmented reality might operate in this grounded sci fi world. In contrast to typical cyberpunk representations of augmented reality where translucent glowing holograms fill the skyline these digital objects would appear solid, tangible and minimal. Starring @mahershalaali @naomieharris @awkwafina Directed by Ben Cleary with Production design by @anniebeauchampdesign Producers @anoncontent @professor_cod @rebecca_bourke

On our team was also @sciarc @fictionandentertainment grads @jatafa + @andrezakhya both credited with me as Concept Animators on the film.

Excellent new collaboration with @neasdencontrolcentre from Liam Young for In Other Worlds- open May 21 at Barbican, London

Imagine every human being on Earth living in a single city.

Planet City is a radical cinematic thought experiment by architect and filmmaker @liam_y, envisioning a hyper-dense, hyper-diverse metropolis built to house all of humanity while the rest of the Earth is rewilded. Compressing questions of climate, migration and resource distribution into a singular immersive experience, the film asks what our future could look like if we radically reimagined the planet.

Join us for a screening of Planet City, accompanied by a live performance by composer, artist and designer @forestswords.

🇹🇷

Planetary Imaginaries Exhibition by Liam Young
With Stories by @lisajoynolan , Kim Stanley Robinson, @clairegcoleman , Chen Qiufan, and @wangasx
@sciarc Gallery Los Angeles.
January 30, 2026 at 6:00pm - March 08, 2026 at 6:00pm
10-6pm everyday. Free parking at 350 Merrick st

Our relationship to the future has forever been filtered through the delirium of our imagined worlds. For centuries, we have fled into fictions to wrestle with the unbearable questions of our own making. Now, at the edge of catastrophe, when the very idea of a future trembles, our generation is called to the quiet, defiant labor of hope, to find light when the world grows dark.

Created by director and worldbuilder Liam Young and expanded through collaborations with graphic designer @neasdencontrolcentre and acclaimed science fiction authors drawn from across the globe, Planetary Imaginaries presents a chorus of stories that sprawl from the microscopic to the planetary. Across films and fragments, movie miniatures and ceremonial costumes, action figures and speculative architectures, the exhibition maps a constellation of fictional worlds, visions of wondrous resistance and new mythologies for an Earth remade.

Encounter stories of infrastructures that resemble mountains and oceans, where computation becomes cathedral, where islands bloom atop the drowned spires of oil rigs turned to coral, where megacities fold inward to make room for planetary parks, and indigenous rockets rise from the rusting lungs of gas fields, where a spacecraft, our last emissary, drifts into the deep silence between stars. Stories weathered by the sobering knowledge that our hopeful futures are written in the geology of a once wounded earth. Here, within these Planetary Imaginaries, we are called to dream again, to invent new worlds that are a testimony to our boundless desires and our fragile chance to begin.

I am excited to launch The Drone Shepherd, a graphic novel in VR set within the speculative future of #PlanetCity a single city for housing the entire population of earth. The experience is on now screening at the @artsciencemuseumsg Singapore before touring around the world.

The Drone Shepherd is a VR graphic novel built from hundreds of hand-painted illustrations, each coming alive with animation, a cast of voice performances and a new score and soundscape by acclaimed electronic producer Forest Swords. As the comic pages unfurl around the audience, they meet a former shepherd who is fleeing his dying family farm as it is ravaged by climate collapse, and follow his long journey through the dismantled ruins of the old world to the shores of Planet City. There food is grown in towering, automated vertical farms bathed in artificial light and glowing algae canals and wildflower blooms snake between the buildings. Initially assigned to care for the agricultural drones, he resents his new life but soon connects with one of the orchard bots he comes to call Echo.  When his mentor, a bitter traditionalist, plots to burn the automated farms, the shepherd must choose whether to cling to his past or embrace the Planet City future.

Announcing our new exhibition ‘Another World Is Possible’ at the @artsciencemuseumsg Singapore. It is an exhibition on the future, exploring the practice of world-building across cinema, architecture, design, and speculative fiction. Sprawling speculative terrains. Hyper-dense cities. Planetary megastructures. Unfolding across seven chapters, Another World Is Possible transports you into cinematic worlds where ecological architecture and literary futures come alive.

In a world saturated with dystopian imaginaries, where chaos, collapse, anxiety and ecological devastation dominate our visions of tomorrow, the exhibition Another World Is Possible emerges as an intervention of hope. Anchored several projects from my @liam_y studio (Planet City, After the End, The Great Endeavour, World Machine), the exhibition invites visitors to step inside abundant speculative worlds that urge us to examine how imagination and design are pertinent mediums in crafting tomorrow's possibilities. The future is not something we inherit—it is something we co-create. Another world is not only possible; it is already imagined here.

Designers, artists and contributors include:@bjork @cdprojektred @clyne_design @dbbd.sg @thomas_dubois_art @voltagectrlr @andrewthomashuang @kidcadaver @voidness__@jasonpomeroy_arch @jakob_kudsk_steensen @osheen.siva @sutu.eats.flies @wangasx @woha_architects @youthsinbalaclava

Another World Is Possible is co-curated by ArtScience Museum (Joel Chin, Adrian George, @honorharger Joshua Lau, Charleen Leo) and @Liam_y with the support of the @designsingapore

The exhibition is a sequel to The Future and Other Fictions, curated and developed by @acmionline Melbourne, Australia, co-curated with Liam Young, and based on an original concept by @elmsly
