Just in time for their 30th anniversary tour of Betty! I’ll be seeing Helmet tomorrow night in Seattle at @thecrocodileseattle, let me know if you’ll be there as well!

Speechless is one of my favorite tracks on the album, a deep cut that I feel often gets overlooked. I remember this song standing out to me the first time I listened to Betty in 2020. It has kind of a pop hook, unusual for Helmet but undeniably within their style, and it’s certainly an earworm. Page Hamilton is a great melody writer and it shows with songs like Speechless.

I tried my best to recreate the tones heard on the record with this cover, particularly on the drums. The drum sound is all natural save for a smidge of reverb on the kick to beef it up a bit. Drums are an early 90s @officialtamadrums Artstar II with @zildjiancompany cymbals. Bass was recorded through a vintage Ampeg SVT, mic’d the old fashioned way and blended with the DI signal. Guitars were recorded through a humble Fender Blues Jr. using my @fulltoneeffects OCD for distortion; I think the right channel had a Boss DS-1 in there as well. I’m no Page so I’m definitely leaving out some of the intricacies of the guitar chords, but hey, it’s a cover, and I’m a drummer first and foremost!

#throwback to when @brian_j_hughes, @fspeakman2025, and I played War Pigs under the name “Trio of Goats” at @slcsaloon in Seattle! Now that @blacksabbath is officially retired I thought it’d be cool to share this clip since it was an absolutely rockin’ performance.

Black Sabbath had a huge influence on my musical upbringing, as I’m sure is the case for Brian & Fred and many of my friends and peers, and my drumming definitely wouldn’t be the same without @billwarddrummer’s chops to go off of. I attribute a lot of my swinging style to Ward and Bonham, but Ward’s “jazz-meets-rock” feel always stood out to me over Bonham’s classic big band and funk influence. Ward’s ability to modulate between 3 and 4 (Wasp / Behind the Wall of Sleep), uniquely placed accents (The Wizard, middle sections of Electric Funeral & Hand of Doom), and sheer power of drumming (Symptom of the Universe, Supernaut) left a lasting mark on my style and how I approach the drums. Thank you Bill Ward and Black Sabbath!!
