These paintings are from a series inspired by 19th century folk art, specifically Norwegian decorative textiles.
The intention of the series is to explore contemporary color pallets, pattern and shape through digitally manipulating the image then reconstructing it on canvas through the use of hand cut stencils. I view folk art and craft with high esteem, holding reverence and a deep interest in art that was considered
‘woman’s work’; art typically relegated as craft, hobby or decoration. I believe this kind of work has a significant role in creating a unique visual narrative that bound culture and community together, creating a larger capacity for creativity and individuation across cultural lines.

Artist Lauren Harrington:
Born in 1985 in Michigan, Lauren Harrington received her BFA at Aquinas College. After moving to Los Angeles in 2010 to study fashion and textile design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, she began working with master printmaker, Richard Duardo. During this time, she began developing her studio painting practice, heavily influenced by pattern, decoration, print and material experimentation, as well as concepts of feminine expression and constraint in both ideology, material, and process.

A painting I made last summer playing with soft pastel colors and interference paint - intending to create dramatic compositional shifts with changing lighting and the nature of interference colors.
Inspiration = design motif out of a 19th century studies in design book

This week I completed a 6 color stenciled pattern of a replication of a William Morris design from the early 1900s. The finished product includes 4 separate registrations, one with hand cut details, along with hand painted finishing touches along 4 walls of the room.
This is another special decorative painting project at the Ossian Sweet House, a nationally recognized historic house with the intention of becoming a museum and education center highlighting the struggles and hard won progress in the civil rights movement.

“This painting is from a series inspired by 19th century folk art, specifically Norwegian decorative textiles.
I believe this kind of work has a significant role in creating a unique visual narrative that bound culture and community together, creating a larger capacity for creativity and individuation across cultural lines.” @lahiza
About the Artist:
Born in 1985 in Michigan, Lauren Harrington received her BFA at Aquinas College. After moving to Los Angeles in 2010 to study fashion and textile design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, she began working with master printmaker, Richard Duardo. During this time, she began developing her studio painting practice, heavily influenced by pattern, decoration, print and material experimentation, as well as concepts of feminine expression and constraint in both ideology, material, and process.
