There was a time when South African models lived in glossy permanence. They were everywhere, suspended in the pages of fashion magazines, their faces part of a national visual language that felt both aspirational and intimately ours. You knew their names, their walks, their angles. They sold not just clothes, but a kind of possibility.
Then print folded in on itself. And with it, an entire ecosystem quietly dimmed.
Today, unless you are seated front row or orbiting the backstage chaos of fashion week, the visibility of South African models feels fleeting – momentary, algorithm-dependent, often unanchored from legacy. This issue, then, is an act of restoration. A deliberate pause to give flowers, not in passing, but with reverence, to the women who built the blueprint. The ones who carried an industry on their backs before it fragmented.

In conversation with cover star @imanmkwanazi , @kwakho , former model now designer and founder of @kissamoda_sa — holds the space for a deeply reflective exchange that moves beyond the surface of fashion and into identity, intellect, and evolution.
Sitting across from Iman, Kwakho guides the conversation with a quiet familiarity rooted in lived experience of the industry, allowing Iman’s story to unfold from runway beginnings into engineering, academia, and the building of African luxury on her own terms.
What emerges is a dialogue shaped by two women who understand both being looked at, and choosing how they are seen , turning visibility into authorship.

“In the beginning, I wanted to prove that I’m smart,” she admits. “Now I’m just like, I am a pretty face, and I am smart. And I don’t care if you don’t think I am.”
It is less defiance, more indifference. A quiet confidence that comes not from validation, but from self-containment.
“There’s a stigma,” she continues. “Not just about models, but about pretty women. Even when people know you’re smart, there’s still that bias.” The difference now is that she no longer feels compelled to correct it.

MntakaMama… I’m literally living my worst nightmare right now, ‘praying everyday that the pain gets lighter…but it’s just too sore. We’re still trying to learn to live without you (even saying that is just weird)…but we’ll keep on trying until it we get used to your absence. I told God that wasn’t strong enough to deal with your passing…but look who’s still standing🤷🏿♀️😜 (falling apart here and there🙄🤦🏿♀️). We’re all broken…kakhulu…but your parents are really struggling, we’re all trusting our good Lord to guide us through this journey (ncedisa nawe ke usthethelele)… I have never imagined a life without you, tuuu. Everyday is a huuuuge struggle, getting up is a mission… I worry about your siblings, children, cousins & friends so much (you were loved by so many people)…but your passing has brought us all even closer…so you❤️. I pray that you’re at peace Nonkosi. You had a very tough life but you were always brave & positive… I guess even the bravest get tired too. I told the kids that we’ve all gained a kick ^## angel now… I PRAY YOU ARE AT PEACE. I PRAY THAT YOU KNEW HOW MUCH I ADORE YOU & I DID ENOUGH TO SHOW YOU. I WAS SOOOO PROUD TO BE YOUR BIG SISTER (wena, noWola…nonke actually)! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE AMAZING MEMORIES…THEY KEEP ME GOING… Sometimes I laugh through the tears…one day it’ll just be the laughs. Rest ke Xaba, THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US SO MUCH LOVE… Can’t wait to hear about your reunion with your faves there❤️… YOU ARE LOVED KAKHULU & MISSED TERRIBLY…EVERYDAY. #MOJAKHE ✌🏿🙏🏾
