Hey all! This week is Mandala Maker’s Fest!!! With @mandalaartschi This is an entire festival of brilliant South Asian artists and folks practicing South Asian arts, and I am so honored to be included among these incredible artists. Please check out the schedule in my bi👁! This is a bit from a new piece I’m working on that incorporates tabla, vocals, accordion, essays, and all kinds of new sounds. This piece is inspired by the reading I’ve been doing about epigenetics, and it explores the possibilities of our lives as we learn about the emotions, experiences, traumas and healing of our parents, grandparents, and ancestors. We’re all carrying things we may very well know nothing about, stored in our genes, that have very real repercussions on the way our lives play out. Come listen!

This is how I end my practice every day - improvising to tunes. I was listening to Frank’s Reel in this one. Sometimes I play like a member of the band, and sometimes I play to practice soloing. I look forward to this part of my practice the most, because it feels most authentic to what I love about playing in groups - the energy and huge pool of ideas when we are listening and responding.

Very excited to announce I’m partnering with the @oldtownschool in Chicago to host a workshop this June. It’s called Tala, Theka, and Tihai, and it’s for drummers and beginner tabla players. We’ll talk about basic rhythmic structures, learn to keep time with tal and theka, and learn how the tihai builds rhythmic tensions and release over these structures. I hope you’ll join us!
