I composed this piece in Paris,2019. This composition was inspired by the battle story between The Lord Narasimha and The King Hiranyakashipu.

Narasimha, a giant lion-man, is the fourth incarnation of Vishnu. It was said that king Hiranyakashipu, Hiranyaksha's elder brother, obtained a boon by Brahma: to not die either by man or beast, by day or by night, indoors or outdoors, on earth or in the sky. The asura, being aware of own immortality, conquerd heaven and earth, and there were no limits to Hiranyakashipu's impudence; he subjected his son Prahlada, Vishnu's fervent worshipper, to a long and cruel persecution. At last one day, when the asura was going to slay Prahlada, Vishnu emerged from a pillar in the form of Narasimha(man-lion) to protect his devotee. When Narashima (neither man nor beast) seized the asura, it was the twlight (neither day nor night), he carried him under the arch of the doorway (neither indoors nor outdoors), where he threw the asura on his thighs (neither on earth nor in the sky), and killed him with his claws.

I am so glad that we were be able to showed my own composition at The UNESCO House Paris. One of the most prestige venue in the world.

Après une escale à @auditoribcn de Barcelone, Polyphème poursuit la route avec Murmurations, un répertoire en mouvement nourri par les circulations entre darbuka, gamelan et électronique live.

Comme des formes qui apparaissent, se déplacent et se recomposent, les pièces se transforment d’un concert à l’autre, entre écritures collectives, masses rythmiques et trajectoires mouvantes.

POLYPHÈME — MURMURATIONS

After a first stop in Barcelona, Polyphème continues the journey with Murmurations, an evolving repertoire shaped by the circulations between darbuka, gamelan and live electronics.

Like shifting formations that appear, drift and reorganize, the pieces transform from one concert to another through collective writing, rhythmic masses and moving trajectories.

This large angklung is called Gubrag, and its name comes from the noise it produces and the verb that noise engenders: ngagubrag in Sundanese. These noises and verbs, meaning « to fall suddenly » and « to make a great noise, » fit into my exploration of sonic architectures created by collective efficiency, only to collapse, damage, and alter stone structures.

The large angklung, unlike the smaller ones I showed you earlier, were produced larger than traditional models to be the same size as our bodies. The notes are also multiplied; instead of a single note, they have three, transporting the audience even further with their movement and creating an even greater sense of collapse!

Those instruments where made in Bandung by @angklungudjo in January but elaborated during my year in Rome at Villa Medici

Here’s a look back at the inaugural performance with the magnificent composer @krishnasutedja and the sublime singer @vivi_balii

We started by rehearsing Gending Sabilulungan from West Java on Javanese Pelog Gamelan,
continued with Gending Tarik Becak on Balinese Gamelan Gong Kebyar, and closed the week diving into “Gandjil”, a new piece by @krishnasutedja, on Gamelan Semara Pagulingan saih 7.
